Heavyweight title challenger Shannon Briggs is in the intensive care unit at the University Hospital Eppendorf in Hamburg, Germany. Briggs suffered fractures below both eyes as well as a concussion and broken nose, after taking dozens of hard shots from WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko on Saturday night, but is responsive according to RTL. He also suffered a pulled tendon and torn muscle in his right arm.

Briggs was rushed to the hospital after the fight as doctors feared a possible cerebral hemorrhage after observing symptoms associated with neurological disturbances and drowsiness. Happily an MRI showed that there was no brain bleeding.

Referee Ian John-Lewis, who has received criticism for not stopping the fight, said he was within “one or two shots” of stopping it. “It was a heavyweight world championship,” he said. “These are tough guys and as long as a man fights back, you have to give him a chance.”

Round 10 is where the ref failed in his duty to protect fighters who can't protect themselves or fight back against a brutal beating.

This is debatable but I was thinking the corner should have pulled him out after RD 10. I'm pretty sure Briggs was telling the ref (he was talking a fair bit) he was ok while he was fighting, so the ref was letting the fight go on due to the response he was getting.

You should be able to put your faith in your corner, they were the ones in the wrong IMO.

this is why boxing should be regulated. briggd had no business in the ring with him. 1 win in 7 years against a top 10 guy and even in that fight he was behind until a late ko with a few seconds left. wba, wbc, ibf can make a "gift ranking" the only true ranking he had was # 77 by boxrec.....and it should every minute of every round

I agree that Briggs corner should have been the ones to stop the fight. Briggs was tired of hearing the nay sayers and would have never gave in and quit on the stool as a lot of fans said would happen. IMO this should be Briggs last fight

Yeah, just like how they stopped the fight when Lewis was killing Vitali's eye to the point of his eye coming out of his socket.

Are you 100 pecent positive that wasn't a foul that caused that cut and stoppage.Lewis fans think that fight settled everything,it didn't.Lewis was always given a rematch for his loses. Why,he never deserved them. When its his turn to give one he retires.Vitali was his only legitimate fight.

No, it was caused by the HUGE uppercuts to Vitali's head. Plus Lewis didnt need to rematch Vitali, he already beat him. You rematch when you LOSE not when you win , stupid. Plus he was 37-38 when they fought and it was time to retire on top. And yeah, he gave rematch clauses, but they never involved fighting his brother too hahahahahah that sh!t is ridiculous. And you idiots are buying which is even worse. I just dont get it at all. But then again, I do, you are all Klit lovers and the love is blinding you.

Vitali was ahead on all cards. He most likely would have KO'd Lewis within two rounds if teh fight hadn't been stopped. Vitali had never even been cut before in his entire career both as a kickboxer and a boxer. Who inspected Lewis' gloves? Nobody, that's who. And it's not like boxing is such a pure clean sport that gloves have never been tamperd with before.

As for Briggs, Briggs' corner should have thrown in the towel. The doctor should have been examining and questioning Briggs. The referee should have stopped the fight.

Yeah he should retire. He took Vitali the distance and that's a pretty good result. Vitali has a great KO record and Briggs was able to take a little '****' on that record in return for his beating.

Good heart, good guy, true fighter. Anyone who fights on till the last bell through 12 rounds of that deserves admiration and respect from the fans. No doubt about it.

Vitali retired Lewis no doubt, thats fact! Lewis got a lucky break with the cut, even then he was losing the fight.

As for Lewis koing Briggs, he was way younger than the 39 yr old world champion Klitschko
