Hawking is a smart one, he might just ropadope Byrd, all the while blinking trash talk to psyche him out. Then when Byrd gets tired, BAM out comes the pinky of doom and closes the show. In the excitement of the moment, Hawking starts showboating in the center of the ring, completely forgetting his physics graft. Fight of the century.
Jimmy hit hard enough to keep the big boys off of him. If not he wouldn't have had his sucess against Lyle, Foreman, Ali, Norton. He could stop ANY of the big bangers in their tracks with that sneaky counter right (among other tools). If he was the 'powderpuff' you make him out to be he would have been run out of the ring by all of the above.
Excellent post jowcol!! A guy who probably has been mentioned..if not, Willie Pastrano...was a famous light hitter...but according to Angelo Dundee, when he sat down on his shots, he was quite dangerous...and Dundee said that he could make that heavy bag sing and moan..
henry maske was a soft hitter and yeah see that's the problem, some guys can hit harder when then sit down on their punches but cant hit other guys when they sit down on their punches, lol, Meldrick Taylor didn't hit that hard either, yes he had blinding hand speed but he often gave up a fair bit of power for that hand speed. There are a few that I am forgetting, guys that barely knocked anyone out :think
Jimmy Young could hit. I think some soft hitters are Howard Davis and Vilimar Fernandez. Though their a cple of my favorite boxers.
Hi red! I've posted this before but Willie has, perhaps, the greatest boxing quote of all time! On his way up in the 50's, he was fighting in NY against a contender (name escapes me). In one of the early rounds, he got decked with a big shot and rose on shaky legs taking an 8 count. Less than a minute later he was dropped with another big shot. He got up wobbly and the ref wiped his gloves and asked him: "Do you know where you are?" Willie: "Hell yes I know where I am! I'm in the middle of Madison Square Garden getting the s**t kicked out of me!"
Slapsie Maxie Rosenbloom- 298 Fights-19 KO's that's gotta qualify him as a light puncher, I do believe.
he lived up to his nickname. Slapsie has to be about the least intimidating attribution ever, shades of slaps & slapstick.
