Hey guys! I made a new boxing Wikia. I just made it like five minutes ago so it's not exactly the most popular one yet. Please check it out. I really need help creating pages and editing it. And you guys are very knowledgable. Please don't vandalize it or I'll be forced to block you. I really think this could turn out to be something big! You guys can check it out at http://heavyweightboxing.wikia.com. Please! Thanks guys!

I'm in the process of doing my own list actually. Obviously with my different criteria though.

I'm upto 55 atm, as in a definite top 55 names that I need to watch and order.

Here's my first attempt at a top 100. Totally different criteria to McGrain though. I have one ranking tool and one only: winnability; how highly do I rate a man's chances of winning against his field of competition. 100% subjective, I don't dispute that but this is my list and how I see these great boxers. I expect to do some shuffling over the next few weeks but this is the first list I have enjoyed compiling, enjoyed. I haven't had to trawl the Internet for clippings and records, I've just had to watch fights and make a judgement. Open to criticism if anyone cares enough to do so.

But these are, imo, the best 100 boxers t lace em up.

    1 Ray Robinson
    2 Pernell Whitaker
    3 Roy Jones

I started off reacting in a "too high, too low" type way but i got lost. Here are some questions.

Is the fighter being judged ONLY in his weight class? You say "against the field". This indicates to me that Ricardo Lopez belongs in the top twelve (only one 105lb fighter ever has a chance against him, and presumably you have chosen not to rank him due to him being primed?).

Also, you have Marciano high. But Marciano would get beat by most ATG heavies over 215, and I think you agree with this.

So it reads more like a p4p atg head to head list? Is that what it is?

Yeah it's easy getting lost in a list so big, totally agree.

Yeah it's a p4p h2h list, how I see the men doing against men their own size.

I'm always torn on Lopez, he could be really high as well, always torn. I'm gonna assume you mean Gonzalez? By the time he retires, if his career continues in this fashion, he'll be in my top 20 easy.

Marciano is Hugh as well, having him high makes me feel bad for leaving Dempsey out who I see as very similar. Tempted to drop Lopez, and place Dempsey next to Rocky.

Indulge me: how can it be p4p h2h AND a rating of men against guys their own size?

Surely "p4p h2h" excludes size as a factor - imagines all fighter the same size?

For me p4p is more about your actual skill level.

It is quote clear to see Robinson is more skilled than Wladimir for instance, but we don't have to pretend their the same size to make that comparison.

So basically I think Hagler is a better fighter than Foster, that doesn't mean I think Hagler would beat Foster because Foster is the bigger man, it means as a prime fighting machine I think Hagler is more likely to beat someone weighing his size.

On the flip I think Pacquaio is a better fighter than Canto, but when the two were at FLW I wouldn't bet money on a teenage Pacman to lay a serious glove on Canto.

So yes p4p excludes size as a factor, but for me that means I can turn around and say "he's a better fighter, but the other man is just too big" it doesn't mean I imagine them the same size and think about who wins.

I don't even know if i'm saying something different to you at the root if it all. But when I am judging Rocky in my list, I'm imagining how he does against opposition weighing 190 or less. And when I judge Lopez I'm imagining how he would do against opposition weighing 105 or less. I'm not judging them against each other in some crazy fantasy fight, I'm judging who is a better fighting machine.

Does that mean I am rating Lopez too low, I'm not sure, is Lopez the best mexican fighting machine of all time? My gut says no, but if I put Lopez in the top 12 I'd then be disagreeing with myself.

Not sure if that makes sense to you but I've done my best to indulge you

The more time goes on, the more irrelevant, whimsical and utterly without meaning a 'P4P all-time ranking' becomes for me.

I like the infinite pub talk about overall skill and status for sure but to actually morph someone into someone else then judge them seems to make precious little sense.

Maybe T.Fury convinced me P4P is a load of ol' tosh.....

It's entirely without meaning. But where's the harm in discussing who you think the better fighter is?

    Just to reiterate.....

There's no harm in it, there's no harm in questioning the notion either...
