Wasn't McLarnin also very inexperienced and the lesser amateur to the Gold medalist Labarba?

As already stated though Labarba, Wolgast, Newsboy, Villa, and many other little guys from the 20s did some mental things.

At the time of their first fight, McLarnin was 16-0, and coming off a win (albeit over four rounds) over a mainstay in the division, Young Nationalista. His quality as a fighter, even that early in his career, had already been established, and it wasn't an easy test for a fighter in his second pro bout (even a Gold Medalist) to take.

I think Marquez is the highest ranked of the three after knocking out the p4p #2 like that, that's taken him over the edge for me. But the other two will be very close behind. He's another one that represents a clutch.

    Holmes - Tier X.
    Lynch - Tier X.
Kid Norfolk - Down again to holding.
James Toney - Down again to holding.
    Solly Krieger - Tier X
Juan Manuel Marquez - Tier X
    Sammy Mendell - Tier X
    Vincente Saldivar - Tier VII
    Azumah Nelson - Tier IX
    Pete Herman - Tier X
    Mike McAllum - Tier X

That's what will be happening in a couple of hours unless someone wants to make a contrary case.

Note that i've bumped Dirscoll and Welsh up a tier, too.

    :good

As much as I like Pedroza and LaMotta and fancy them worthy of Top 100 placements, LaBarba would be more of a glaring omission if he fails to get in.

I'm looking at Villa or LaBarbara as the fly for inclusion in the next dose. But to be clear - I don't think you can have a glaring ommission ranked between 90-100. There are 40 fighters who could fill those spaces. Literally.

Especially when combined with wins over Cerdan, Holman Williams, and 3-1 against Zivic.

Plus victories over Basora, Tommy Bell, George Costner, Burt Lytell (BMR), Gene Hairston, Bob Satterfield, California Jackie Wilson, Tony Janiro, Tibero Mitri, Laurent Dauthille in dramatic fashion, and a ****load of other good fighters. Some of his wins were controversial (Yarosz and Villeman)...But then again, a lot of people thought he deserved fight four against SRR as well.

Ran Lloyd Marshall pretty close, too. Rallied at the end and apparently did well enough that a lot of people thought he deserved the nod in that fight, too.

A case for his inclusion can be made...and it seems as though I just made it.:D

Drew, did you see my post on your take on the LaMotta-Marshall fight from a few pages back? 1 or 2 rounds is what he gets in the reports i was able to find.
