    Savon ( 91K only ) World amateur champion 1986, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997 Olympic champion 1992 , 1996, and 2000.

    Balado – ( 91k+ only ) World amateur champ 1989, 1991, 1993, Olympic champ 1993.

    Stevenson World amateur champ 1974, 1978, and 1986. Olympic champ 1972,1976, 1980


    Russians:

    Lezin ( Super heavy only ) World amateur champion 1995. Only man I can recall beating both Klitschko’s in the amateurs, though both Klitschko's later avenged the loss.


    Vystrosky – Defeated Stevenson twice in his prime, once via KO.

    Right. What can you add on Igor Vysotskiy. I believe he was a south paw.

    Who else in your opinion were top amateurs who never went professional?

    Lezin also beat Povetkin in the amateurs.

    Vysotskiy was a very good boxer with an excellent chin, but was prone to cuts, which was why he didn't go to the olympics. He now has his own amateur boxing club.

    Some others:

    Alexander Yagubkin (91-kg)
    -Multiple times Soviet Champion
    -3 time European Champion (1981, 1983, 1985)
    -Two time world cup winner (1983, 1985)
    -World Champion (1982)

    He actually wanted to go pro in Japan in 1987, however, a campaign criticizing the athletes 'undignified' behaviour circulated in the press an he was banned from leaving the country. After this he left boxing for good.

    Yagubkin sounds intersting. What was his style? Did he ever meet Savon or Stevenson?

    Well, Stevenson was fighting at superheavy when Yagubkin was boxing, and Baez was the Cuban in his world championship win...


    To be honest, I don't have any footage of him, only what my old coach told me, and articles on the net. He's apparently quite a tall powerful guy, who weighed 107kg before cutting to heavy. In a recent interview with him, he says he thinks he could have done well against Tyson had he been allowed to turn pro.

    My favourite Soviet boxer was the guy in my avatar though. He's not a heavyweight though..
