Sorry to have hurt your feelings there, considering you were trying to extend the olive branch, but you lose, trollboy. And you know it. :smoke

And now I genuinely have to "duck" you, to retain my own credibility.

You're a known troll, and it dents my reputation even to be seen conversing with someone like you.

    Ta-ta! Happy Trolling!! :hi:

1.I think Duran-Leonard 1 is well clear of Spinks-Holmes for the following reasons:

    - Absolute peak Ray Leonard was a significantly better fighter and tougher opponent than slightly past-prime Larry Holmes. Hell, absolute peak Ray Leonard was a significantly better fighter and tougher opponent than absolute peak Larry Holmes, in my opinion at least.

    - Duran's performance against SRL was just so, so, SO much better, more impressive and more convincing than Spinks's against Holmes.

Those were my main reasons (because my criteria is Quality of Opponent + Quality of Performance first and foremost), but also, Spinks was not the first lightheavy to ever beat a heavyweight champ. He may have been the first lhw champ to do so, but ATG lightheavys like Ezzard Charles and Gene Tunney had also shown it could be done.

Yes, I suppose Spinks-Holmes was more historically significant, but that does not equate to being the better win, going by the criteria I laid out. I hope this answers your question mate.

2.I think Duran-Leonard 1 is the greatest victory achieved by any fighter at any weight in the history of boxing. JMO. :good

great thread, no real complaints, just would have liked to see Holyfield - Qawi higher, but thats one of my favorite all time fights. I might be a little biased.

I see your point mate, and I thought it was a cracking fight too.

I just think that Qawi was better as a lightheavy, was better a few years previously, faced huge size disadvantages against Holyfield, plus Spinks had already beaten Qawi more comfortably/convincingly than Evander managed to.

This was my reasoning on it.

Yeah mate that pretty much clears it up. I might get the DVD player out and put Leonard-Duran 1 on as I haven't seen it for a good...three months or so.

Excellent thread by the way !!

What makes it a great win: Holmes had been heavyweight champion and the division’s number 1 fighter for 7 years, and his record stood at 48-0, one short of Marciano’s historic record. Spinks had never fought any higher than 175lbs at world level, and was almost 22lbs lighter than Holmes on the scale. After 15 rounds of boxing, Spinks was awarded the victory.
The cynic would say: Spinks was fortunate to get the decision, after a fairly negative and calculating performance designed to edge a decision with the judges.
