Some of the finest TV ever made. Ray Wise is unbearably brilliant as Leland. Have you seen Fire Walk With Me, the film? I watched it the other night.
This is a really good list. I don't agree with all the choices, in fact I think our top ten would be completely different, but the quality and effort is obvious. I give you major props... On another note it is too bad Margarito's win over Cotto is so tainted... That was one of the best boxing matches I have ever seen. Out of curiosity where would you have placed the Margarito Vs. Cotto match if the controversy didn't exist? How could you possibly believe that? Cotto won the first half of the Margarito fight convincingly, it was only in the last half that he really started getting beaten up. On the other hand, Cotto only won the first round against Pacquiao; from that point on he was getting pounded.
How about the Missing medical that required Pac to take the test very close to the fight?? Just look at Pac legs in the 1st Morales fight, He got no bounce in his legs late in the fight. That was a weakened Pac in there. But without the cut, Pac will beat Morales that night. Pac give away 4 rds because of that.
Don't know who the hell you are Popkins but that's some seriously nice work you've done there. The level of effort you've put in is terrific. Nice one fella.
You can't use the blood testing as mitigation either mate, Pac does not like being blood tested, he has a mental issue with it and does feel weaker after it (whether this is real or in his head is irrelevant, the guy feels it so to him it is real), but the fact is that he agreed to go ahead and fight, and he fought well on the night, so there can be no excuses as far as I'm concerned. In the same way, the cut did affect him, but that is no excuse either, Pac allows cuts to affect him mentally (this happened in the 2nd Marquez fight too), but that is not Morales's fault, Pac should deal with cuts better than he does, the fact that he went off the boil for a few rounds after being cut is his problem, Morales still had to box well to win those rounds, and he did that, end of story. I have the same attitude to the 1st fight as I do to the 2nd. Both men brung it on both nights, and to the victor, the spoils. :good
In the context of the thread, in comparison to the other opponents rated, Cunningham is a C+ opponent. You have never heard any cynics on here saying Cunningham outboxed Adamek for stretches in that fight?
End of the story but it also takes out the legitimacy of Morales win. EM was helped by circumstances. Not really a Great win!!
Good stuff Popkins and interesting read. A few thoughts: - I don't agree with excluding Lewis-Klitschko or Marquez-Vazquez I. It's one thing when the injury doesn't have to do with the fight, but when the winner CAUSED the injury with punches, he should be given credit. That said, I think Lewis over Klitschko would be a top 10 win. - Calzaghe-Kessler and Ward-Kessler being right next to each other seems out of whack to me. The version of Kessler Ward beat was 80% of the version Calzaghe beat, PLUS the Calzaghe fight was for ALL the marbles, while the Ward fight was just for a paper title. - A few that seem too low to me: Hatton-Tszyu, Jones-Ruiz, Pacquiao-De La Hoya (not even an honorable mention? People quickly forget how Pac was basically moving up from 130 and was a 3-1 underdog), Barrera-Hamed, Baldomir-Judah, Calderon-Cazares I (I think that at least deserves a mention - dude could be in the 90 pound weight class if it went that low, and he convincingly beat the true 108 pound champ), Calzaghe-Kessler - A few that seem too high: Raheem-Morales, Pacquiao-Barrera, Sanders-Klitschko (a fluke is a fluke, IMO), Rahman-Lewis, Corrales-Castillo (great fight, but not a great performance outside of one round really) A few not mentioned that probably should be mentioned somewhere: Pac-Hoya, Calderon-Cazares, Mormeck-Bell, Gonzalez-Michalczewski (probably the most glaring omission, IMO, but I think a lot of people forget that was in the 00's, plus it wasn't televised in the US), Tokuyama-Kawashima III, Morales-Chi
