In Style, Charles look better, but Gus had to be doing something right to rein for 8 years.

At first I thought about Conn, than I though nahh, he jump up into heavyweight, and didnt control the divsion when he gave up the crown to fight Louis in 41.

Gus step up and rule the 40's. Charles was mostly going to Middleweight, to Lightheavyweight to at last Heavyweight. Dont think he stay there long to be the force in lightheavyweight imo. sure he beat Bivins, and Moore, and others. But Most like Burley was in the middleweights.

Lightheayweight soley, I think Gus's 8 years on top should out weight Charles rise and decend to the heavyweights.

If an argument for Lesnevich to be rated higher than Charles exists, it is a very, very weak one.

After his time in service, Charles never lost to a Lightheavyweight, and he beat Moore 3x, Bivins 3x, Marshall 2x, Maxim 5x, Elmer Ray (a heavyweight Charles beat while weighing 175), Oakland Billy Smith 2x, etc.

Lesnevich's wins pale in comparison, and he lost frequently to top rated opponents at 175. The only thing Gus has is that he got a shot at the title and won it, but they're worlds apart otherwise.

thanks for that i overlooked them 2 sorry i think Johnson would take it ill change that

also just some intresting things came up

Only 4 men in my list was the best in 2 adjoining decades at the same weight and that was Louis, Johnson, Ali and Saddler. And Saddler also was the best at Featherweight in the 50s.

Pernell Whittaker, Sandy Saddler and Alexis Arguello were the best at 2 weights in the same decade.

Julio Cesar Chavez was the best at SFW in the 1980s but in the 1990s he jumped 2 weights to be the best at LWW.

Arguello was the best in 3 weights within 2 decades

Dempsey as the best of the 20s seems a little bit of tough on Wills in particular but Tunney also.
Dempsey went 7-2? through the 20s, while he had reasonably good opponents in this time his resume during this period pales in comparison to Wills and his inactivity must count against him during this decade

I gotta agree with this I don't see how Gus can he ranked higher then Charles. Not to mention Gus lost to the best light heavy's he fought during that time in Bivins and Conn.
