    What were the toughest title fights?

    For example, fights famous for their toughness and the combativeness of the contenders were:
    -Jeffries/Sharkey;
    -Nelson/Wolgast;
    -Jeannette/McVey
    -Ali/Frazier

    Opinions?

    Hi Guys.
    All the above are excellent choices, with your permission I will put up Basilio / DeMarco 1 , a bout between two tough , gritty, hard as nails Italian/ Americans, both fought with a burning intensity, both had to grind there way to the top, there were flashier fighters around at the time, Robinson and Gavilan for a start, but not these two, craggy rough hewn Basilio was a iron boned pugilist, who shunned the limelight, the complete antitheist of his arch rival Robinson, his body looked like it had been cling filmed on, not a spare ounce of flesh on his taut white torso, he was fanatical in his training, Dundee " he was the best conditioned fighter I ever trained " as for DeMarco he was no slouch, another single minded , no nonsense approach to training. stories abound about sparring partners feeling his wrath, they were set to colloid for DeMarco's title, the Ring had this " the result of this fight is this simple, would the best chin in the division, be able to take the best left hook in boxing today " and it nearly didn't, in the 4th round DeMarco detonated the hook, it shook the onion farmer done to his boots, for a few seconds he walked like a sailor who hadn't had shore leave for a year, and found a bar with half price drinks, BUT he remained upright, much to the disbelief of both DeMarco and the crowd, from the middle to the stoppage Basilio put down a body beating, that had hardened fight fans, looking through their fingers, it was a mercy when the ref stopped the fight in Basilios favour, DeMarco was dragged to his corner like the guy who had upset the barmaid once too often, a truly epic encounter, that would be repeated a couple of months later.
    stay safe guys, chat soon.
    Mike.
