Russians let him fight after failing the drug test, so I don't doubt that they'd let him carry a knife into the ring.
I can't imagine they'd let him use a knife during a boxing fight. He's definitely heading for a DQ loss and probably a criminal record if that happens.
They let him fight on anabolics. Which increase his ability to cause grevious bodily harm. Failing to see the difference.
If they don't, they're complete garbage. Maybe they should have TransNational Olympic rankings and give non-participation medals to all the Russians who got banned from the Summer Games while they are at it.
The WBA doesn't rank him. The WBC doesn't. The IBF and WBO don't. He's not ranked by the NFL, the NBA, the CIA nor the FBI or even KGB. But thank goodness there's a safe space in boxing for drug cheaters in the TransPEDational rankings. What a freaking joke. The experts on the panel that produces these rankings should all sign a statement that the TTBR endorses cheating. At least be up-front about it.
I think that's a little harsh Pat, but I understand what you're getting at. I do appreciate what they're trying to do, though, and I do believe their rankings on the whole tend to be very good for the most part. But I do think, in the absence of an official stance on that sort of thing, it would be worthwhile and beneficial to establish some type of official position for this sort of situation.
For my worthless 2 cents, I have always believed Povetkin was grossly overrated on the whole, regardless of his failed drug tests. I remember people being very high on him years before he faced Wladimir, and then suddenly, somewhere along the line, he was inexplicably held in even higher regard by many in the years following his loss to Wladimir. A lot of people whose opinions I have a great respect for have viewed Povetkin with much higher esteem than I ever had, so maybe I'm missing something. But I never believed he was as good as advertised.
I'm curious to see if they drop him now that the WBC has officially sanctioned him as a two-time drug cheat. Or maybe they'll make him TTBR Super World Champion Emeritus of the World.
They do have an official stance. If a boxer is officially suspended he'll be removed from their rankings.
Alexander Povetkin is not suspended from boxing. He is free to fight other boxers possibly in many countries. If he fights the result counts on his record. It is not really possible for an independent ranking organisation to decide itself that he is suspended when he is still active in boxing.
Yes, it's quite possible for the board to say "We're not going to rank fighters who have failed multiple drug tests (or even one) for the period that they are suspended." It is undisputed that his last win was allowed to happen against an opponent who showed on less than a day's notice while Povetkin had anabolics in his system. The fact that the Russian federation sanctioned it doesn't mean this ranking board cannot take a stand. This is a bunch that has gone to the mainstream media and said, "Hey, our rankings are on the up-and-up, please use ours instead of others." At the very least, they can contact the same media in full disclosure and say, "By the way, we rank fighters who are currently suspended by sanctioning bodies for failed drug tests, so if you do use our rankings, at least you should know that."
