Will the winner of the Klitschko-Joshua bout be the new champion ? We have the number 1 facing the number 2. Strictly speaking, Wlad is unranked due to inactivity, but that's hardly his fault as he was slated to rematch Fury and Fury backed out. By most reasonable applications of TNBR's own general principles, the winner of this bout should become champ. Or am I missing something here ?
Plus his inactivity is his fault. He broke down negotiations with Joshua when the WBA said they wouldn't sanction the fight. He broke down negotiations with Lucas Browne when they said they would do. His obsession with the WBA title is just as much at fault as Fury having his mental breakdown.
Maybe, but the fact remains that, but for the Fury meltdown, he would not have been removed from the list.
Even with the Fury meltdown, he would not have been removed if he had been actively trying to make fights rather than wait for the WBA.
In those instances where a contender is inactive for one year or more, he will be removed from the rankings until such time as he fights and earns back a place in the top ten. Special circumstances will be considered. I believe it was a "special circumstance" that Fury backed out late. The inactivity clock should have been reset at that point. You have to remember that for all the contempt the ABC belts are held by many, boxers will always try to collect them as they carry more prestige (and money) than a more abstract ranking like TNBR or RING. So Wlad was hardly being unreasonable when he wanted the WBA belt to be on the line for such a challenging and dangerous fight as Joshua.
The circumstances were obviously considered prior to him being removed. The belts holding more prestige than the TBRB is exactly the problem here. He wasn't content with the IBF belt or the fight with Joshua just for the prestige. That's his prerogative and after a long career he's every right to make his choices. That being said even without Fury going crazy he still could have had a fight scheduled for November but backed out of negotiations. He then could have had a fight scheduled with Browne but again backed out if negotiations. He hasn't won a fight for two years now and him being unranked is a reasonable call to make. If it was me, I'd probably have given him the benefit of the doubt but it wasn't my call I'm afraid.
We are indeed. I was just stating the reasons they won't class the winner as champ (someone asked on their website and that was the answer they gave)
How the feck are Stevenson & Alvarez still #1? I'd have Indongo over Postol right now too. Crawford at #1 is fine..
I think it's cos they've yet to be beaten since taking the top spot. Indongo might well move to number 2 after the update.
So when Canelo said he was campaigning at 154 he was the middleweight champ, and now that he's declared he's campaigning at middleweight he can't be champion. Well, good job following the alphabet belts you claim to be better than. If you asked Canelo if he would continue to accept recognition by the TBRB as middleweight champion he would probably say sure, why not. What he said was he was middleweight champion when he beat Cotto for his WBC title, and then no longer middleweight champion after he beat Liam Smith for the WBO light middleweight title. After agreeing to fight Chavez he gave up that title also, and announced that he's not going back to 154 again and is now a middleweight. What he's said in recent media comments is he doesn't have a belt so of course isn't a champion. If you however believe that a real championship is above the alphabet titles and should only be won or lost in the ring his comments should not be sufficient reason to abdicate the championship. What SHOULD be reason to lose the championship is only that Canelo in the year and a half since winning what could be called the championship fought against an undeserving welterweight, went down to light middleweight, then went up to super middleweight. You sure haven't cleared up the middleweight championship situation.
