my welter rankings would be:

2. floyd
3. bradley
4. thurman
5. marquez
6. brook
7. khan
8. maidana
9. porter
10. alexander

 

This stands. Gavin is the better win for me than Porter, despite their belt-holder status/ranking/hype outside their home countries before they got their cherries popped.

Brook will probably get put ahead of Bundu just due to absorbing the shroud of extraneous hype that surrounded Porter (based on nothing but his two previous fights) but for me that is wrong and just exemplary of the herd doing its thing and refusing to collectively admit having in hindsight been wrong about such levels of hype, which is to be expected, but is unfortunate.

I actually like Hekkie a lot, but his claim even if he adds Pocket Hercules in Monaco doesn't quite stack up to Panchito's.

 

Brook warrants inclusion in the Top 10, based on the victory over Porter. I would have argued for him being removed entirely from the ratings had he lost; but he didn't so he's in.

Porter did defeat two fighters rated in the Top 10 based on his previous fights, so I can see why he would still be rated.

That being said, Bundu's got a case for being rated in the Top 10, based on his work and the win over Gavin. At the very least, he's got the number 11 slot locked down, and gets included in the rating should anyone in the lower reaches slip any further down the ladder.

 

I don't think it has to warrant inclusion. Can, but doesn't have to.

I really don't put much stock in that run of Porter's. He is a one trick pony, and fair play Haymon got him two consecutive big names (Alexander, Malignaggi) against whom the one trick could work but in terms of actual substance I question his ranking and the amount of credit he was given for that run...especially having shown his true limitations so recently before it against Kidd Diaz. As we saw last weekend, it was no matter of Porter simply undergoing rapid "improvements" since he fought Diaz. The pony's one trick doesn't carry over into every match-up and it showed.

Gavin is the better welter scalp for me, though some may disagree (though I'd wager if they were really looking at it objectively they wouldn't and would see they're just clinging to what a major TV network pushed on them and the jarring image of seeing Malignaggi roughed up like that, with some perspective getting lost because of that emotional gut-check...)

Personally, I think Bundu's resume, and the manner in which it's been crafted, is sufficient for him to lock down a spot in the Top 10. But he has to displace someone that's currently in the ratings, so the question is who gets removed.

Would you remove Porter, Guerrero, or Khan in order to provide the vacancy for Bundu to fill...?:think

 

I have no qualms leaving Porter out in the cold at #11 with Saturday's loss. In fact, I think not doing so to make room for Bundu would be very wrong. Just my two cents though.

 

I think that's a valid course of action, but I myself might be inclined to remove Robert Guerrero, simply because one fight over the past year (against an unranked Kamegai) might not necessarily be enough to warrant his continued inclusion in the rankings. Matter of opinion, obviously, but we're both in agreement that Bundu's done enough to get in, either way.

 

Who has Thurman beat to be rated so high

 

Well, Zaveck/Chaves/JSK/Diaz (stopping the latter three) is actually quite a decent run and might be the best active 4-win run any welterweight has going today...

Pacquiao has Rios/Bradley since back to back losses; Marquez has beaten only Alvarado since the Bradley defeat; Maidana just lost and before that had JSK/Martinezroll:)/Lopez/Broner; Brook has Saldivia/Jones II/Senchenko/Porter; Bradley just lost and before that only had three W's put together at welter; Bundu has El Massoudi/Jackiewicz/Purdy/Gavin.

The only guy with a better four-in-a-row is Mayweather with Mosley/Ortiz/Guerrero/Maidana, and I hesitate even there if only because Ortiz sucks just so very badly and drags the quality average down just by his inclusion. :think

...but, I realize "best 4-W streak at the weight" is a completely arbitrary stat that nobody follows or abides by when ranking (not even me; was just pointing out and noting with interest that he does have that going for him) - although it would suggest to me that you have to absolutely place him somewhere inside 10. jas probably does put him too high with #4, though.

Even though he's 2-3 at 147lbs, Marquez's welter resume beats Thurman's. I mean KO6 alone...

Thurman's getting KTFO when he steps up against an elite fighter or schooled against a non-puncher. And no way is he top ten, welter far too rich for his blood ATM.

 

I argued the same thing on the Board. And got outnumbered -again.
