We will thank Al Haymon later for seeing the future and knowing early that PPVs are going away. PBC has been bringing in a lot of viership and sponsers on many of their prime time events. Being that there are about 1 million true boxing fans out of 330 million people living in the U.S. the competition for our attention is getting good. HBO has stepped on the gas and will give us a great Saturday night come September 10th. Basically 2 hours of boxing.:happy Hopefully they stay on this path and adjust because the PPV model is dead. Canelo won't sell, Ward/Kovalev will break 200,000 if their lucky, it's over.
no it isn't over... there will be another ppv star. probably anthony joshua - he's already doing the most PPVs in UK and Ireland
Hopefully you're right PPV is a cancer on this sport. "fans" claim PPV determines your worth and that's BS
Most of the PPV fights aren't even worth the price. I can name several from Mayweather and Pac alone. And don't forget the atrocity of the Mayweather vs Pac, not worth the money. There have been better quality fights for free.
Get ready to see more PPV, not less, until the big boys decide to up the boxing budget instead of continuing to cut it. You can't gameplan like you've got $110 million when your budget is slashed to a quarter of what it was, and you don't get the number of dates you used to. PPV subsidizes the difference, and even running them at a small loss is cheaper than footing the entire purse. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the trend continuing.
I think of it as what Napster did to the music industry. Lesser-known fighters will have more opportunity to get their name and brand out there. Creates fluidity in the marketplace of talent. I'm all for it, survival of the fittest.
Yes,yes, yes, yes, yes!!!!! All fighters will have to learn to market themselves just like musicians have to now.
Mayweather vs Guerrero Mayweather vs Berto Mayweather vs Maidana 2 Mayweather vs Baldomir Pacquiao vs Diaz Pacquiao vs Clotted Pacquiao vs Rios Pacquiao vs Algieri Pacquiao vs Bradley 3 In 2014 there were 7 PPV fights. None of them meant squat.
Hopefully it's dead, boxing needs its fanbase back, especially with Mayweather, Pac, Klitschko gone new fans need to be attracted.
"about 1 million true boxing fans" What does that even mean and what research have you done to get to that number? Canelo will sell because the Mexican fan base will continue to buy. I agree Ward/Kovalev is going to struggle to sell. HBO is still paid cable and while they do have about 30mil subscribers only a small percentage of that tune in for boxing. I think more big bouts on free tv in prime time can help fighters become stars and ppv attractions. We need more fights like Thurman/Porter on free prime time tv.
