Here is the deal. There are two clear reason's for Gamboa's actions, and they are both in the end connected as well.

    1. Top Rank takes at least 30% of Gamboa's purse, Ahmet Oner who is not only Gamboa's co promoter, he also happens to be with Gamboa before top rank and in fact was the guy who paid and got Gamboa out of Cuba takes about another 30%. Those are just the promoters, I'll just focus on the big boys and skip over the managers like Luis DeCubas and Gonzales who are also taking a percentage of his purse.

So just there you are leaving Gamboa, the fighter, taking home only 40%.

    But it dosen't end there.

    2. Gamboa is used to his cuban trainer 'Ismael Salas' and became champion with him, said he would never want to fight for anyone else. Top Rank forces him to switch trainer and go with Emmanuel Stewart right before the biggest and most dangerous fight of his career, even though gamboa was completely against it. Oh and dosen't speak a word of english by the way.

Not only that, but add to that that Emmanuel Stewart would most likely take no less than 10% of gamboa's cut.

At this point Gamboa's purse is left at

to fight his biggest fight without his head trainer.

Is he really to blame for not fighting Rios ? Or is the corruption in boxing we should be once again blaming.

Its a good one to think about.

No one put a gun to his head and said "Sign here for XX amount..."

IF, he took the $70K advance, that too is on him.

IF everything you say is correct then I put no blame Gamboa, but I don't put much blame on his already because I know how Arum is and Gamboa's people said he wasn't going to sign and go to the press conference even before it happened because they were unhappy especially with signing 5 years to the *****

Taking the $70K in advance was dumb, but he never signed anything.

Plus I wouldn't put it pass Arum to give Gamboa a $70k advance and then showing him a contract which he couldn't accept and then saying well you took $70k in advance so now you have to accept no matter what.

I don't blame him for not wanting to sign a 5 year contract.

While I can sympathize with Gamboa, he took the advance. He signed.

I agree that it's a poor contract but it does excuse Gamboa because it's a contract he chose to sign. He wasn't forced into giving 60% away. It's his own fault for signing with two greedy, corrupt promoters.

Why has Gamboa been so quiet? No public apology to his fans? If there is a good reason for the fight being scrapped, he should be vocally defending himself. Then again, who knows, maybe there's a gag order.

His reputation took a hit. But I don't think it's that bad. He'll find a way to redeem himself. He probably knows boxing fans are fickle. You're only one good win away from being treated like a king again.

My thoughts exactly. I don't blame Gamboa at all - the one at fault here is greedy, exploitative old Arum.

Arum is very weathy and getting old, why does he still want to take advantage of talented boxers from impoverished backgrounds?

Since he's past age 80 now, hopefully it won't be long before Arum will be where he belongs, in Hell.

I assumed it was something like this. Even if this is not 100% correct, I'm sure it's fairly accurate in that Gamboa is getting f'd not only once, but double f'd by both Oner and Top Rank.

Question: Why do Oner AND Top Rank each get 30%? If they are sharing promotion duties they should split that 30% between themselves, not each take 1/3 of the pie.

When a fighter is leaving with less of the purse than the others, which in this case it seems after everyone is paid out Gamboa may take 15-20% of the leftovers, there is a problem.

:huh Then that goes on his manager. But the thing is, Gamboa shouldn't have:
    1. Agreed to fight in the first place
    2. Accept money for this fight

    sounds pretty believable

ohner is dangerous...but i believe he actually really likes gamboa and looks out for him

its easy for the keyboard warriors to say "well he signed the deal" blah blah....gamboa isnt well versed in english or the business side of the game(sound familiar?)....the guy was under pressure to get over here and get his career going as fast as he can....look at rigo...the guy is 30 years old already.....gamboa is obviously going to be taken advantage of.....im glad somebody talked some sense into him and told him he was getting **** for pay while taking a big risk.....the guy wanted to be with one of the biggest names in the promotional game and get good exposure....arum is a scumbag...and ohner is too...but i believe ohner actually has some sort of bond with gamboa
