- He walked through DaVarryl Williamson in a round. The same Williamson that gave Wlad all sorts of problems and ran the Byrd man close. - He beat Jirov, who was a world class cruiserweight. Yes, Jirov later got stopped by Moorer, but he was well ahead before the stoppage. Jirov's only losses were to Moorer, Toney and Mesi. - He beat Monte Barret, who went on to beat Beck and Guinn in his next 2 fights. - He was on his way to the title before his injuries. Wlad, at that stage of his career, would not have been able to deal with him. I think he would have had a 2 year run as the world's best heavyweight, similar to what the Byrd Man in the early 2000s.
Always wondered how far he could have gone. I don’t know if he’d make it through Wlad but would have been interesting.
While I enjoyed your Byrd thread comments I was skeptical .. now no longer .. you're an alt .. this is not a serious thread.
He was good fighter but a little on the small side for a heavyweight. Jirov had him badly hurt in the 10th round and would have almost certainly stopped him had the fight lasted 20 more seconds. Jirov was a good puncher but didn't hit anywhere near as hard as Klitscho. I think he was a top ten guy but not on the level of Vlad, Byrd, Toney, or Rahman.
Just a reminder. Wlad lost to Saunders and Brewster around that time. Williamson and Peter also gave him problems. I think Mesi would have caught him.
Byrd would have beaten him. Perhaps Toney. But he was all wrong for Wlad in the mid 2000s. He would have beaten Rahman as well.
I can assure you that I am 100% serious. I'm not a fan of Mesi, but the heavyweights of the 2000s get a bit overlooked. It was a golden age for the heavyweight division, we just didn't know it at the time. I was a Byrd fan at the time, but it was only later than I came to realise how good his peers were.
Watch the 12th round on youtube. Right hook is what hurt Mesi. Nothing dirty at all. It was just a random injury that happens in this sport.
I legit don’t remember it was so long ago now. I just remember him getting hit with a really dirty shot
Byrd - One of the best pure boxers in history. Vitali - Best head to head heavyweight in history. Wlad - All-time top 5 heavyweight. Not quite in his prime, but still a force. These three all-time greats had a great supporting cast. Saunders, Mesi, Rahman etc.
