While still being a "possible" outcome, a referee TKO decision wouldn't have been in the spirit of the IBF rules. In particular, the referee is enabled "to stop a contest and render a decision at any stage if he considers it to be too one-sided, or if either contestant is in such condition that to continue might subject him to serious injury", thus awarding a TKO. One might argue about the necessary amount of "one-sidedness" to actually stop the contest. There is no clear description of the IBF intended threshold, but in the KO rules there is also a #5 who gives a kind of indication: "Three (3) knockdowns in any one round do not automatically terminate the fight. If in the referee's judgment, which must be keen and decisive, the knockdowns have been indecisive and clearly have no injurious effect upon the boxer, the contest may continue but with good sense and judgment and the boxer's welfare always paramount.". That means the referee shouldn't award automatically a TKO win even for a round so one-sided that a fighter has 3 KDs in a row. Of course, he might judge the fight has become one-sided with only one KD, if it really looks like; the key information is that IBF rule points towards a prudent wait-and-see approach. Bute was off his head and exhausted, a further round would have obviously seen him KO-ed or TKO-ed by the ref, but for the 12th he still had something left to keep survival mode on (though he was really close). The referee was waiting for a clear sign the Bute wouldn't have been able to make it to the end of the round: I'm convinced that should Andrade have KD-ed Bute with 30 seconds left (or so), the referee would have awarded him a TKO win even if Bute were to be again on his feet before the 10 count. Unfortunately for Andrade, he was not able to KD Bute before practically running out of time, and the referee did not feel to stop for one-sidedness a match coming to its natural end without a KD at least (after the actual KD the match was over anyway).

Andrade fell in the first fight after a punch but because he was off balance.

Are you that ****ing clueless? No one with any sense respects the sanctioning bodies enough to take them seriously.

    :good

this is the counter argument i said could be made that would be 100% valid.

that's what it comes down to. what choice the referee made. he could have stopped it before the kd but didn't. end of story

This fight was for a title, a belt and Buté was the IBF champ.. With the round 12, maybe, I can give the round5 to Andrade, so, Buté dominated completely this fight until he gazed on the second-half of the last round. Does the ref had to give the belt to Andrade because Buté beginned to gaze at the end. I think the ref has take the good decision. there is an implicit rule in boxing, if you want to take the belt from another, you have to win a clear decision or KO and KOT. Andrade has missing by a few seconds but at the end, he has lose.

This reminds me of the Taylor-Chavez fight, when Richard Steele said it doesn't matter how long is left in the fight, if the fighter is not fit to continue then it should be called off.

Here it is clear that Bute was not fit to continue and it should have been ruled a win for Andrade.

Credit to Bute for dispatching Andrade in a spectacular fashion in the rematch.
