Naseem Hamed was a person that you either loved or hated, his fight with kevin kelly was to me one of the most exciting fights ive ever watched. Hamed was a very talented fighter he was akward, gave you weird angles and had a lot of pop in either hand. But against Barrera he didnt have his best performance but Barrea is a classic pressure fighter and Naseem was at his best when he control the pace and distance of the fight.Naseem Hamed was as good a offense arsenal as any fighter in the last 15 years but most great offensive fighters have trouble fighting going backwards against an Aggressive fighter but i think is unfair to judge his legacy on one fight
naz was great in the boxing ring, but not much of a man the way he handled people outside of the ring. end of.
Hamed was one year removed from knocking out Bungu. That was arguably his best career performance. Likewise, Hamed and Steward were making a lot of noise around 2000-2001 about how Hamed was finally getting the training he always needed. The idea ahead of the fight wasn't that Hamed was deteriorating as a force at world level. These talks didn't come up until he was bested by Marco in a fight where the Mexican was widely expected to get stopped. Hamed fell short against a spectacular fighter. No more, no less. "Oh, but look at the fights with Steve Robinson". Barrera was three times the fighter Robinson ever was. Marco was yards ahead of literally everyone Hamed had fought up until that point. It's not a coincidence that Hamed loses against the toughest opponent of his career.
El Cepillo your right it is common place however i do feel that Naseem body of work should should be taken into better account when speaking about his legacy. I personally feel that his career is often defined by one bad night and when you look close at his record he had some good quailty wins over Wilfred Vazquez, Kevin Kelley, Wayne Mccullough, Caesar Soto and he held the three major titles at Super Featherweight WBO/WBC/IBF at different points in a five year run as a world champion. To me his record holds up better then Sven Ottke who had alot of home town decisions, the prince won or lose in the ring This content is protected
Naz had tremendous power for a featherweight - maybe one of the hardest hitting feathers ever , he had sublime skills as well but he neglected these in favour of the spectacular KO - he was a huge draw and brought many people back to the sport during a rather dull decade - trouble was though his huge ego was perched on top of a fragile psyche - the defeat to Barrera just blew him away mentally - he couldnt get himself together again and wasted what would have been his best years wrestling with his inner demons as well as legal troubles culminating in jail time.
Once again,a Hamed fan is mentioning these names as opponents as if Hamed's wins against them was(were) (a) particularly impressive achievement(s).All 4 of those opponents were either 1.past it.2.weren't natural featherweights or 3.highly flawed when Hamed fought any of them.Decent wins AT BEST,nothing more, nothing less and certainly nothing to write home about. What all 4 of them have in common is that MAB was clearly far better than ANY of them, and even the most hardcore Hamed excuse makers have to admit that or they risk completely destroying what little credibility they might have left concerning this subject. In all honesty, the 1st elite opponent Hamed fought embarrassed the **** out of him.BTW,easym1979,Hamed held those alphabet straps at featherweight, not super feather.Floyd Mayweather challenged Hamed to a superfeatherweight catchweight fight at 128,to which Hamed replied,"How many times do you want me to move up?"
It wasn't very good.It was just another list of excuses for Hamed's one loss that has been done countless times anytime a Hamed fan discusses their hero's being embarrassed. And btw,Hamed deserves all the **** he gets for being such a classless *******.When did Barrera turn a Hamed fight down?Proof? When they fought,Hamed was the heavy favorite in that fight and was expected to knock Marco out as MAB was the one considered past it,probably primarily due to his tko loss to Jones years earlier.
