There are so many Boxing Experts, Gurus, Wrtiters and Forum Posters who believes that there is unparalleled depth within this Division. But the reality is...This Division is as Shallow as it comes. The unanimous Top 2 fighters of the division are "WITHOUT A DOUBT' Timothy Bradley and Devon Alexander. However there is some argument as to what fighter is the TOP DAWG of the Division...Although for me, Timothy Bradley is more tested. So lets take a look at the depth of the 140lbs division, Shall we:

    1. Timothy Bradley - Tested...Witter, Cherry, Holt, Campbell, Lamont Peterson and now an upcoming test at Welter in undefeated Luis Carlos Abregu (29-0).

    2. Devon Alexander - Just stopped two former belt-holders and made serious hardcore efforts to make fights with Bradley, Lamont Peterson, Zab Judah, Ricardo Torres before "SETTLING" on Andriy Kotelnik. Bradley said NO, Peterson and Torres can no longer make 140lbs, Judah is having camp issues....so enter Ketolnik. The Fact that Alexander trageted fighters with Skill and POP...should tell you all you need to know about this EXTREMELY TALENTED AND SKILLED FIGHTER from St. Louis.

    3. Amir Khan - UNTESTED TALENT!!! Khan has been carefully matched with fighters that were brought in to make him SHINE...Oisin ***an, a aged and finished Marco Antonio Barerra, Ketolnik, Dimitri Salida and "Pillow-Paws" Malignaggi. Even Bredis Prescott was supposed to be a "set-up" Opponent until Khan's Chin got in the way. Has anyone seen what Prescott has done since...NOT MUCH. I am not saying Khan has no talent. In fact, I think he is a very good fighter....Just UNTESTED. And a bit of a JERK. Example: After beating Malignaggi, he goes on to say that he wants the TWO BEST FIGHTERS in the division to fight each other while he arbitrarily says he'll fight the weakest of the "so-called" top 4...Marcos Maidana. Yeah, Bold Statement Amir:patsch. In fact, this BIG-Mouth kid said in a Tweet that he is the "biggest Money maker and draw" in the division, yet Team Khan has release two names as his next possible opponents...Casamayor and Michael Kadsitis...TWO LIGHTWEIGHTS, REALLY???:-(

    4. Marcos Maidana - How soon we forget!!! This is the same fighter that GBP traveled the globe to find the perfect fighter to place in the ring to make their fighter (Victor Ortiz) look good. And for about 3 rounds, Maidana was doing exactly that, getting knocked around EASY. But a funny thing happened along the way...ORTIZ GOT EXPOSED as a fighter with NO DEFENSE, NO STAMINA AND MOST IMPORTANTLY...NO HEART. So now Maidana has capitalized on beating a HYPE-JOB.

    5. Victor Ortiz - Ortiz is one of those fighters tailor-made for Stardom in the US. Solid Boxing Skill, Large Mexican Fanbase, Handsome, Great Story (Over-coming a family that abandoned him) and Perfect "Gringo-English" that will allow him to "Crossover" from Letterman/Leno to El Gorda y La Flaca, Republica Deportiva y Despierta America. But Lack of defense, stamina and HEART will keep that from ever happening. Who can forget the the Classic Post-Fight Interview after QUTTING against Maidana. I remember watching that thinking...WOW, not only did he lose the fight...he lost his desire to fight, EVER AGAIN!!!

    6. Juan Urango - Personally, IMO...I would rank Urango as the #3 fighter in the division, and would have NO PROBLEMS defending why he should be be ranked there. He has 3 losses...HATTON, ANDRE BERTO (AT 147LBS) AND DEVON ALEXANDER. All former or Current Belt-Holders with a CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF SKILL. I can see Urango beating Khan, Maidana, Ketolnik and Ortiz by STOPPAGE!!! But I Guarantee you...They'll never fight him.

    7. Andriy Kotelink
    8. Kaizer Mabuza
    9. Paul McCloskey
    10. Demetrius Hopkins
    11. Julio Diaz

So as you can see...TWO TOP-NOTCH, ELITE-LEVEL SKILLED FIGHTERS at the top, and the rest are just UNTESTED, HYPE-JOBS OR THE BENEFICIARY OF BEATING HYPE-JOBS. So in reality...The 140lbs Division, IS NOT REALLY THAT DEEP AT ALL!!!

Maidana's KO record speaks for itself, I don't think he's a hypejob at all. However as you say Khan is talented but largely untested, I agree.

Well, the important think is that you think Ortiz is handsome, I suppose.

I still say Maidana is relatively unproven also. I don't think he's a hypejob because there's been no hype about him. He made his own name for himself by KOing a guy he was supposed to lose to. However, he does have 27 KOs in 28 wins, but Ortiz is the only one of those guys I've ever heard of (Cayo I think I might've known about). And he also has a SD loss to Kotelnik. I think the fact that Kotelnik beat him means he gets outboxed easily by Bradley and Alexander, and probably even Khan as long as the Brit avoids getting caught.
I do, however, think these guys are all quality boxers and it makes for a nice, deep, intriguing division. A long, long way from "as shallow as it comes".

Well Said...And I respect your opinion. However, I never said that Maidana is a HYPE-JOB. I simply implied that he is the beneficiary of "beating a HYPE-JOB".

I find this funny considering it was a SPLIT DECISION. And nothing came easy with that victory at all. Had Kotelnik not had a solid ass chin, he would've been KO'd and lost on the down end. I personally thought he won that fight, but fighting in Germany doesn't get you a nod these days.

You also have to consider all the other skilled elite fighters that aren't in contender status

    JMM

    Manny Pacquiao

Katsidis is moving up and is pretty much on the same level as Maidana in skill. Unproven yes...but our questions may be answered soon enough.

    Hatton MIGHT make a comeback.

So those are just some names to be mentioned in the mix....possibly.

I never said he got shut out by AK, but he did lose. SD or not, Maidana was in a nip-n-tuck battle with a guy who is not on the same level as Bradley, Alexander or Khan.

Urango also really should have lost to to Rabah back in '06.

You're right, those are All names that I thought about including...And also several 135lbs fighters who were recently talking about moving up...Anthony Peterson, Humberto Soto, Katsitis and others. But IMO, JMM is at a point in his career where I just didn't feel comfortable adding to a TOP 140lbs list. Pacquiao is a WW and has even talked about fighting the Cotto/Foreman winner and Margarito at 154lbs...he is NO LONGER a 140lbs fighter. And the last video I saw of Hatton was during the Mayweather/Mosley fight...and he looked every bit of 200lbs. So it's safe to ASSUME that he is NO LONGER a 140lbs fighter!!!!

I don't think Manny will return to 140, and Hatton can possibly take a loss to two of the top 3 guys on that list. JMM skipped JWW on his way to fight Floyd so that might not matter.

The only thing I like about the possible inserts is that Katsidis might move up. But he is a bit quicker than Maidana with better movement, but he cuts like a butcher...let's hope the extra talent at 140 doesn't cause any cut TKO losses.
