I get the feeling - especially of late - that people are looking at today's HW scene from perhaps the wrong perspectives. because if you remove the exceptions of Tyson, Lewis, Marciano, Dempsey, Louis and Ali from HW history and all of a sudden the current crop of HW's are very impressive in the grander scheme of things.

The issue everyone has is they're looking at these great legends and using them as a basis for their entire HW division at the times of their respective reigns as if everyone they fought was on par with them and applying it to today's HW scene which simply isn't true. But these are just a few guys, a few unique gifted, special exceptions from hundreds if not thousands of HW's. And even then thousands of the best HW boxers on the planet from a pool of over 3+ billion human beings.........

Johnson, Botha, Ruddock, Holmes, Liston, Douglas, Spinks, Bowe - just some of the average 'names' of great HW times gone by but none of these could hold a candle to either Klitschko I believe (and it is my personal opinion - though Wlad would be easier than Vitali for some). Povetkin would be on equal footing to these guys too I feel. As would Ibragimov (who was so underated its criminal!).
So what if these guys (bar maybe the Klit's) couldn't beat Ali, Tyson, Marciano, Dempsey johnson etc etc - as I said those guys are the best of THE best. Unique, 1 in a million type boxers.

Valuev truly is **** though and I consider Chagaev to be good but overated. He might beat a few of the above though but I wouldn't expect it.

Bottom line is I think people just need to step back and think logically for a moment with a clear head. When you remove historic romantacism things really aren't so bad. Peter had potential but fell. Chambers is pretty good. Brewtser had alot of untapped potential & I dare say there's a few more out there so lets not be quiet so harsh ok :)

Gibberish. If you think guys like Johnson (assume you mean Kirk) and Botha are average and you also think a Liston, a Holmes, a Spinks or a Bowe are "average" then you're seriously misguided.
Today's heavyweight scene is th weakest It's been in my lifetime. The Klitschko's are good fighters, don't try to big up the rest of the division to make it look like they've beaten better fighters than they actually have.
If you think Povetkin or Ibrgimov would have a chance of beating Sonny Lison then you need psychiatric help

You dont think the dvision is weak ? Chambers decides to train for the first time in his life and beats ( a fairly woeful ) Dimitrenko and people on here go nuts and proclaim that a new king is born !

Well yes actually I do. Liston was a heavy fisted boxer but other than that he had sweet **** all else. Little footwork, telegraphed shots, weak upper body movement, slow workrate so yes I do think he's overated. Ibragimov would have dominated him.

Povetkin is the most dominant amateur superheavy ever who has apparently adapted to the pro game well enough. Liston was a thug. If you dismiss Povetkin outright, you are beyond psychiatric help.

  6. Dude the division sucks...... just let it go

I doubt Iggy, Povetkin, Chagaev, Chambers would even be in the top 10 in the 90's

Great head movement, the best jab in boxing history (at least on film), possibly the best left hook, a fine boxing brain, could fight on the outside, mid range and on the inside, a rock hard chin. Ibragimov would have been beaten before he even got in the ring, look how scared he was of Klitschko in the most pathetic excuse for a title fight in any division ever.

I don't mean to be rude but you're clearly either mad or just pitiably ignorant

So how does he beat liston, lean to his left a bit and leave his right arm extended? That was the strategy against Wlad

The 90's had many very exciting fights, which by itself does not mean the level of ability was better. A high scoring basketball game may be more exciting that the Pistons or Spurs playing perfect defense, but that doesn't mean it's better.

In the 90's Bobby Chyz gave Evander Holyfield fits, as did an ancient Holmes. Wlad would KO both in his patented 8 - 10 round beatdowns. McCall was just a few months drug free when he upset Lennox Lewis. Golota and Tyson displayed more psychiatric issues than boxing skills, a great prospect Ibeabuchi self - distructed, but today everybody complains how many HW's don't really want to win or are fat. Douglas was fat in his first title defense, Moorer was fat in his rematch with Holy, Foreman was fat for most of his comeback, Bowe basically cut short his career because of his eating problems. You can always focus on the negatives, but in boxing, people always focus on the positives of pasrt eras and fighters and critizise current fighters.

Its actually the exact opposite of what the OP has suggested. We have two very good heavyweights (borderline "great"), and then, beneath them, there isn't a single contender that bridges the gap between elite and 'decent'.

To put the division into perspective, Holyfield made Valuev look stupid for 6 or 7 rounds by employing basic movement, a 46 year old Holyfield. This is a guy who is probably one of the top guys in the division against a guy who is borderline C level nowdays and nearly two decades out of his prime.

Its the absence of guys like Ruddock, Tucker, Bruno etc. who would beat seven shades of **** out of fat ****s like Sam Peter, who in the past have been considered the top challenger to the Klitschko's.

The big mistake people make is blaming the Klitschko brothers for the division, that doesn't make sense on any level. People take their disappointment in the division out on Wlad in particular, which is ridiculous, considering he is one of the only two top quality fighters in the division. If there was a couple more Wladimir Klitschko's in the division, it would cease sucking.

  12. Thats what i'm trying to say..... the Klits are good and would be competative in most era's ...... but there is no 2nd tier competition out there

there is a lot of talent, ibragimov was very underrated, very fast, southpow, good chin, powerfull, tricky and great counter puncher, povetkin is one of the best talents ever, but a little bit too small, chambers is a great talent too, chagaev is a very slick and clever boxer, same for gomez and haye has talent, tony thompson was not bad too. the main problem is that besides the klit bros, there is no tall, fast and powerfull fighter.

That 46 year old Holyfield would have beaten Carnera, Patterson, Johannson, Ellis and a few other champs, who, at their time, were undisputed. If there had been alphabet titles, very ordinary fighters in past eras like Quarry would have held "world" titles.

  15. Are you joking Bowe is in another class to Peter, Brewster, Chagaev

I could pick a number of the 90's second tier guys that would beat at least 2 out of 3
