I would definitely say McVea above Jeanette.

Perhaps McVea vs Jeanette could be an interesting thread.

On film you could say Jeanette looks a bit better than Wills, and might be able to beat in head to head.

But I generally agree with the picks here. McVey looks like a left hook only type, who shockingly retreats when hit. While we only have a few rounds of him on film vs Battling Jim Johnson, that is what you see.

Johnson vs. Wills would have been interesting. I get that Jack Johnson wasn't going to risk his title vs any top ranked black opponent, and we know why :)

Okay, but why not fight Langford, Wills, Jeannette, and Mcvey post 1915?

Now are you going to suggest that Langford wasn't the #1 contender for Johnson from 1909-1914? - Mendoza

Okay, yet you see Langford #1 overall in the group??? If you think Langford wasn't the best contender for Johnson to face from 1909-1914, please explain, as you clearly state Langford was #1 above. -Mendoza

That is evaluated on their complete respective careers.
I should have thought that was obvious !You are trying to make 2+2 into 5.

Speak plainly, just admit that you think Langford was the top rated guy for Johnson while Johnson was champion.

    OR

Make a case for someone else.

McVey went 49 rds with Jeannette suffering multiple kd's.
No man does that unless he is 100% GAME!

He went 15 rds with Johnson and his face was described as a horrible mess ,distorted and bloody.Johnson said no," braver man than Sam McVey ever stepped in the ring."

Langford declared ,"Big Sam was as game as a pebble".Langford said he would rather fight two other guys for the same money than tackle him again.
We do indeed know why his agreed fights with McVey and Langford in Australia and his 2 proposed fights in NY did not happen and it was no fault of Jack Johnson's as I have conclusively proven in my earlier post which is supported by dates times, places promoters names, purse amounts, and the exhaustive research of Adam Pollack! But---. HATERS GOT TO HATE! Boilermaker has just posted series of Harry Wills interviews in them Wills says the most he ever got as a purse for fighting Sam Langford as $1,200 Still think 2 blacks fighting drew in big money?
