Power - Robinson Defense - Robinson Handspeed - Leonard Footwork - Robinson Footspeed - Leonard Chin - Robinson Ring generalship - Robinson Leonard was great. Robinson was greater.
I don’t understand how Leonard is getting the nod ahead of Robinson for Ring generalship based on the votes. Robinson made it to 130+ fights with only having lost a single bout. You simply can’t do that no matter how gifted without amazing ring IQ. Whilst Leonard arguably had the best ring IQ of the fab 4 he wasn’t in the same league as Robinson in this department; plain and simple.
Consistency and longevity, you're absolutely right, no comparison. Robinson is head and shoulders above Leonard. But in pure ability and competition faced , they are closer, much closer than some would care to admit.
I honestly think I’d have to give Robinson the edge in all of those, though to be fair the two men are fairly close in some of those categories
To be fair, I think it is more visual history than revisionist history. The best of Robinson was at welterweight and very little is available to view. As a middleweight, once you get past 1953 or so you see noticeable signs of slippage in Robby. A lot of Robinson's greatness is in books and newspapers as well as being anecdotal. I have no doubt it's true but everyone has seen Leonard's abilities in living color, as they say. That tends to leave a bigger impression.
I don't know about Leonard having faster hands at welterweight, it's a real shame we don't have better quality footage of prime Robinson. I agree with the rest of the more prevailing opinions, except I think Robinson was the superior ring general.
I think Leonard beats Robinson at 147lbs but I don't think Leonard would enjoy 10 rounds with Zivic twice and another 6 fights with LaMotta.
That makes sense. Quite a few seem to see Leonard lagging way behind Robinson in terms of greatness but I don't see that much daylight between them at all. Maybe they'd split a series of fights at 147lbs?
For me here was only one REAL Sugar Ray & that was Mr Robinson. The other was just a substitute Saccharin Ray Leonard
Yeah it was Tex said " Boxing owes me an enormous debt I got rid off Cosell single handed when I fought Larry" LOL
