one thing for cetain, sonny liston's jab and thomas hearn's straight right are superior to anyone else's.

 

I disagree about Listons jab. It was powerful, but it was a bit slow. I rank both Holmes and Louis' jab better than Sonny's, and possibly Ali's. This is no slight on Sonny, his jab was one of the best ever. I just don't think it was as good as those I mentioned.

liston KO'd people with his left jab, i can remember reading about a fight where his right was broken so he just fought with his left and jabbed himself to a KO victory.

 

And Jimmy Braddock said when Louis hit him with the jab it felt like somebody hit him with a crow bar. Whats your point?

 

point is sonny listons jab was unbeatable, joe louis was good, but compared to sonny liston, joe louis aint ****.

 

Ali didn't find it so "unbeatable" did he? And Holmes is jab controlled a fight better than Listons or Louis' jab.

 

that was not the prime sonny liston, if your comparing the sonny vs ali aginst joe louis at his best then louis wins.

but if you compare the sonny aginst patterson then the comparison is totally different. sonny in that fight was on top, his jab was at its best on them nights. i've never seen someone with a better jab then sonny liston.

My friend, Im not gonna get into a pissing contest here. Liston had an all time great jab. 3rd 0r 4th best in my opinion. But don't try to convince me using either Patterson fight. Folley or Williams are much better examples of prime Liston.

Is that so? Then why did Ali thump him so bad just over a year later? Did he suddenly fall out of his prime? What happened to that jab that made him "unbeatable"? Are you really gonna try and use a small fighter who's chin (Patterson) is regarded as less then stellar, and only went a total of less than 2 rounds against Sonny to prove what a great jab he had? Believe me, you would have been better off using Folley, Williams, even Eddie Machen.

 

During the first Ali fight, Liston was fat and out of shape. He quit like a ***** on his stool. The second fight was fixed...not saying that it would've mattered that much, but it was fixed none-the-less.

Liston deserves some credit, I don't know about his jabbing though. I always thought he used his jab as a joust to push the other fighter where he wanted them and hold them in place for the big right hand.
