GGG seemed tense and nervous like the occasion of fighting on a stage of that magnitude for the first time got to him a bit and Canelo getting off to a really good start exacerbated that. But then GGG started having more success in the 3rd IIRC and he began to loosen up and land with more consistency. He was simply walking Canelo down and outworking him. Canelo landed some lovely shots and had his moments but he fought in spurts whereas GGG was consistent throughout. GGG was at his best when he was walking Canelo down and forcing him to the ropes. He's a ****** machine lol. Canelo is an excellent fighter but he did not win that or deserve a draw IMO and that seems to be the overwhelming consensus everywhere I look.

One thing that really impressed me about GGG tonight was he was in there against a very talented fighter who had a speed advantage over him and was able to catch him clean with a lot of big shots. Canelo's speed, counter punching and movement (the later of which I wasn't expecting) posed him big problems but he made the adjustment and he showed a lot of intestinal fortitude given the enormous pressure he must've been under to pull it out (don't forget had he lost this fight many were ready to not only write him off as a hype job but write off his whole career and everything he has achieved so far). A lot of less mentally strong fighters would've caved in under the weight of that.

Good post, Serge. I definitely was surprised that GGG seemed to exhibit nerves in the early going. I agree that the big stage gave him some jitters early, in uncharacteristic fashion, before he ultimately settled in and began finding his groove.

In a rematch, I don't think GGG would get off to such an awkward start. But credit to Canelo. He fought well, even if the scorecards bordered on the obscene.

Triple G won. 8-4 maybe 7-5. 6-6 is a stretch. This is Kovalev vs Ward 1 all over again. One fighter gets every advantage from ref, to homefield, to judges, to maybe even lax drug testing, and one guy basically has to destroy him to get the win.

    Boxing :(

Thanks. Yes GGG looked very tense. But like I said, he must've been under enormous psychological pressure. Once he started to relax, and I really do think he showed a lot of character and intestinal fortitude not to wilt under the weight of that pressure and hold it all together, he was able to find his rhythm and some consistency so he could apply that constant pressure and outwork Canelo.

Canelo is a very talented fighter and he fought an excellent fight. His counter punching and head movement in particular was superb and I was very impressed with how he was able to make GGG miss with those big hooks off his.
