Because at the end of the day, if he was as bad as people make it out to be, he would've been starched by many of the elite heavyweights that he fought.
The Golota fight was extremely interesting based on the scorecards. I had him winning and well ahead after six or seven rounds, but I felt Ruiz essentially CleanSweeped the later part of the fight because Andrew wasn't doing anything. It was almost as if he felt like he was winning by such a large margin that he could literally giveaway rounds. That is what cost him the fight. I scored the fight multiple times and had at one point for either guy every time I scored it. Also, the one knockdown against Ruiz was garbage and the point seduction against him was garbage too.
I hate corruption in boxing, and Ruiz's entire career at the world class level is the worst example of it I have seen in 35 years of following the sport. Ruiz attained a level in this sport because of cheating, rigged rankings and other chicanery that his ability did not merit. Without King, he would have been just another limited journeyman.
Where Ruiz was underappreciated was in his academy award winning acting. His acting & Joe Cortez . corruption or ineptness you choose, cost Kirk Johnson a world title & his career . Every body blow Kirk threw ruiz cried foul & Cortez warned. OLD Joe saw all those "low blows" but missed the most blatant headbutt from ruiz worst I think Ive ever seen
Thank you! He's unappreciated rather than just underappreciated for good reason. Probably the most aesthetically hideous montrosity I've seen in a boxing ring. Sloppy jab, smother the opponent, hold, fake being fouled, whine to the ref, repeat. And his trainer. Ughhh. He doesn't deserve the slightest revisionist redemption. Ssssh, there's impressionable younger fans who didn't suffer through his career as it happened, and think there might be something more to him than his worthwhile competition.
When David Haye calls you out you know youre ****e. A poor poor fighter and so what if he was a nice man outside of the ring , this isn't a charity.
As a fighter he wasn't as bad as some made out, he was world class, he just wasn't exceptional. He was boring to watch, he got some gift decisions and he was dirty. At the time he probably got more criticism than was fair, but he was seen as a paper titlist who's reign detracted from the true champion. Anyone remember his rant after losing to Toney and then getting the title back. He basically told all boxing fans to go phuck themselves, never seen an outburst like that from a fighter and unsurprisingly it didn't endear himself to the fans and just gave critics even more ammunition.
Only Heavyweight beltholder to ever lose to two former Middleweights. He had ZERO skills. That tells us he was overrated not under appreciated.
