Have to agree with Holman Williams being underated. Overated on this website has to be Calzaghe some people act as if he is god or something.
i agree with maxim as overrated. I mean did he beat anybody convincingly, all of his top wins have some sort of controversy to it.
I think his win of SRR was legit. It is a 15 round fight. You have to pace yourself. Just because a guy wins is winning a marathon through 20 miles does not mean he deserves to win the race. That was an absolutely excellent win on Maxim's part. He outlasted the other guy. If Robinson wanted to win under the distance, he should have KO'd the other guy.
Interesting that the ref collapsed because of the heat though, isn't it? I hear you though. Do the distance or you can't make the decision.
You have a point but , even if this was a good win (i realy dont think it is) , he was fighting a natural welter
Nah, Ray was a full-fledged middle by that time. Had been for years. It wasn't that ridiculous a weight jump.
He was campaigning at mw , but come on , he was never best-suited at that weight . He was only there because there wasnt a 154 division then
If he had no business fighting a lightweight, then don't sign the contract. Any win over SRR is a great win. Maxim used his advantages better than Robinson did.
He only had some setbacks there because of age and having had so many fights. People fill out as they age. By 1949, he was having huge difficulties making 147. By the early 50's, 160 fit him best. He had the stature for it, being 5'11" after all.
Im not even debating the tactics that either fighter used in the fight . I respect Maxim and i said you had a point . But the win over Robinson at 175 at that point of his career aswell , is not a great win , sorry it just isnt . This is not bias talking here . Saying that win is great is madness . Have you seen it ? It is one of the most easy performances of Robinson's career for most of the fight , and the only reason it ended the way it did is because of Maxim's SIZE ADVANTAGE when just bearhugged Robinson and sapped his energy repeatedly. Like i said , you have a point saying that Maxim deserved the win , he never cheated . But some of the things your saying here are just not right
a christams gift against patterson hometown split decision against bivins all fights with walcott were very close Yep he never convincingly beat a top notch fighter.
I get you, but still , you must get what im saying aswell . He was never in his prime at 160 , so a 175 pound champion should do well . I get you though
I respect your point, but I guess I gotta side with the guy who counts it as a good win for Maxim. He's right. Ray expended too much energy early, and couldn't go on. Being brilliant for 13 rounds is fine, but that alone doesn't get the job done. Maxim could continue, Robinson couldn't. It's not like Maxim beat a used-up Robinson either. Ray had many more good wins in him after that.
