The Underrated/Overrated thread

I agrred with him on the point of Ray expending too much energy and Maxim won the fight fair . But saying the win is a GREAT one for Maxim , and that Maxim OUTCLASSED Robinson , these are the points im disagreeing with.

I cant make people agree , but come on , i shouldnt even have to be sayig this

 

Im sure it has been edited !! Really though , if he did say outlasted , then i agree with that . But i still hold my ground on him saying it was a great win though

First of all, I of course meant light heavyweight. Otherwise, if Tunney's wins over Greb are legit and worthwhile, so should be considered Maxim's over SRR at this weight. And I do own the fight, have seen seen it at least three times (it's somewhat boring imo). However, the object of a fifteen round fight is to go fifteen rounds or end it under the limit. I do not give Robinson credit for a partial spectacular performance. Maxim performed better within the context of the agreed encounter and rightfully emerged victorious. This is not just a semantic arguement, it is the absolute truth. Thus the W in the record books favoring Maxim.

Why are people so in love with the could have's and would have's of the sport? Stick to the results.

 

I never disagreed with you on Maxim deserving the win , and i dont know why you keep bringing it up . I only disagreed with you on the outclassed thing (which i got wrong and apologised for) , and that you said this was a great win for Maxim . The win is not great .

You cant compare it to Greb - Tunney . Robinson had one fight at 175 , Greb campaigned there and beat great fought great fighters there

 

And im not even bothered about the would haves of the sport , i was simply using what i felt was supporting my argument that the win we are discussing is not 'great' for Maxim , thats y i said that

 

I give a lot of credit to the weight jumpers.
So Ross, Armstrong, Tony Canzi and Fitz would round out my top 4 about, since they were the first to do it in harder coundtions. No Alpha titles, no weight divsions evey few pounds, It was easy for say DLH to be a 5 weight divsion champ because of the new rules ete. And the alpha titles help a lot also.

I think Ali is over rated in pound for pound though.
Underrated is Tony Cani, One of the great pound for pound jumpers of all time, and most people leave him off the top ten.

 

I think Maxim beat Robinson good. Maxim was not his old self, the heat was pretty amazing, and Maxim saved and conserved his enegery for the 15 round fight. Robinson was not, and the heat got to him. Under normal condintions, Maxim would have thown more punchings of couse. Joey did have the style like Fullmer and Carman to trouble Robinson. So just because Robinson was ahead in THIS fight, does not mean that he will be a head in a rematch. Joey fought smart. Robinson didnt.

 

I hear what you are saying. I only disagree on the great win. I think it is a hell of a win for Maxim.

 

I totaly agree and i havent disagreed once . I disagreed with seamus saying the win was a 'great' one , it is not a great win , lets just clear this up now

Under-rated: Jess Willard

 

Overrated - Paul Williams - Margarito blocked so many of his punches he got credit for.

Underrated - John Ruiz - never have i seen a boxer treated so badly by the press when he was winning , dsgusting imo

 

Give him all the credit you want, you're selling a lot of other fighters short by including him over them though.

 

Why not. Even though I don't agree with it, its not as if its laughable. Good to see a modern day great fighter get so high on someones list for a change. The old timers had quanity more than anything else over todays fighters.

Willie Pep had over 200 fights, but probably around 15-20 were worthy. Thats a rough estimate.
