Thinking on it has had me becoming interested in the topic. Is the uppercut potentially the most powerful punch in boxing?

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The only known incident of a boxer being pulled instantly (That I know of) with a punch is Jess Willard killing Bull Young with an uppercut.

It seems to be the punch where a fighter can hit with the most leverage. The hard to believe destruction of Joe Frazier at the hands of George Foreman was almost exclusively due to uppercuts that Foreman was basically throwing from the floor. It's a punch thats easy to get tons of speed and leverage behind, even if Foreman was an arm puncher.

Razor Ruddock had several devastating knockouts, and was one of the more feared Heavyweights of the 90's. His bread and butter was a hook/uppercut
that nearly decapitated Michael Dokes in one of the most chilling KO's of the 90's.

Lennox Lewis was an awesome puncher at HW, his favored punch in several fights was the uppercut.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    So, thoughts?

That hybrid hook/uppercut can provide a lot of leverage but leave you wide open. I have never been able to throw a great uppercut, not even at a bag or mits. For my money the hook is the most devastating and can be thrown very short so the opponent never sees it coming.

I think that depending on who's throwing it, and weather or not the proper technique is used, it can certainly be among the hardest of shots. It needs to be applied at the right time as well though. An uppercut is a punch that is typically thrown either when you are trading in close with an opponent, or when one is advancing towards you. An upper cut is not a shot that should be utilized as a fighter is moving away. James Douglas for example, tried to throw an uppercut from a distance at Evander Holyfield. He missed, and Holy countered, leading to a knockout loss for Douglas..

I dont think that the uppercut lands with the most force in terms of kinetic energy of all the punches in a given fighters arsenal.

It is probably the most devastating, due the the direction it comes from, and the fact that it is so difficult to predict.

The counterargument to that, it that it is one of the hardest punches to time when you are moving away from it.

My straight left is pretty dynamite according to those I trained with or had hold the mitts but I always followed through too long and was easy to counter with their right. Ergo, one root canal on the left side and at least one other in the future.

The uppercut can be the most dangerous punch in the game as it has an element of stealth to it. There is something to be said about the old adage, the punch you don't see is the one that hurts you.

For pure one punch ending power, the left hook is still the best knockout punch in the game.

I suppose it's more to do with who's throwing it - this guys uppercut for instance was pretty evil - I'd dare say as powerful as any

but then Bruno didn't actually go down and Ribalta was up in a flash - but then maybe thats says more for their guts and incredible chins?

Worst way to lose power, punches have to snap to be explosive and KO potential.

    THIS.

The uppercut is a punch you do not see coming, these are the ones that can hurt you and surprise you. I would also say that from the direction of the uppercut it hits in a place that makes your head snap back, which causes a knockdown, more than most punches, due to where it hits the chin. I think all this added together makes it a punch that can be lethal but it is very hard to land and use, and also I dont think it generates as much force as a stright punch.

My trainer (he was about 70 at the time) from the boxing gym i used to go to, used to say that there's no better shot than a southpaw straight left, then he started acted out going 'bang', that's what he thought anyway.
