I feel a little bit sorry for Whyte but his bad attitude before the fight makes it hard While it may not be up there with Hagler-Hearns the Whyte - Povetkin match was still fun with a few knockdowns before Povetkin put Dillian to sleep, we don't see as many stone cold knockouts these days so that really was one for the highlight reel. I've seen a few comments on social media and from youtubers that Povetkin will retire when he loses next but why should he? why can't Povetkin retire now? I can't think of a better way to go out, Povetkin has been there, seen it, bought the t-shirt and failed the drug tests, he has nothing left to prove so why should he hang around to take an L from one of Eddie Hearn's puppets? RETIRE NOW POVETKIN, what a way to bow out
I agree. Time to pack it up Russian knight. You have been a true gentleman and you have nothing left to prove in this cuthroat bussiness.
It was a decent fight. No-one expected anything less. This could've been Whyte's best performance. He was doing everything right expect for the thing which got him KOed. He was putting his weight forward, on his lead-leg. His corner men told him not to, he did it in an exchange and Povetkin threw the punch of his life. Kaboom! I do kinda feel bad for Whyte. I never understood why people dismissed him as bum, he has beaten very legitimate opposition and always gives it his all. He just also happens to always give it his all when he opens him mouth. Actually, this is pretty clearly Povetkin's best win.
You guys know in your hearts that there is about as much chance of Povetkin retiring as there is of one of us being chosen for the next mission to the moon. He was saying that even if he LOST to Whyte, he would fight on. This is who he is, and what he does, and he will now, like every aging fighter who catches the lightening, believe that he has turned back the clock. Povetkin is one of those guys who is going to go until he is 46, and whereas he has already lost to Joshua, and won't beat Fury, I would not count him out if other opportunities arise from title splitting.
The equation is different for everyone. A loss or losses will erode his bargaining position to the point where the training camp is no longer worth it for him, at which point he will retire.
The Takam fight was impressive. That was the first time I'd seen Povetkin fight and his inside game is/was about as good as it gets. I hope he retires, a win over a top fighter is a good way to go out. But I don't know his financial situation and I don't know if he wants to retire. I didn't think he reacted well to punches in the Hunter fight, I didn't see this one but I thought off of the Hunter fight that AP was shot. Povetkin is impressively skilled and is always entertaining too.
The reason people don't like Whyte is because of his inflated sense of worth and him being rammed down our throats as much more than he is by the Matchroom/Sky hype machine. If you fail multiple drugs tests, don't offer rematches in fights which you win via headbutt, talk about all comers and then pretend you don't know who the undisputed champ in the division below you moving up is and whinge about not getting a title shot when you were offered a big money fight for three belts then it'll **** some people off.
A win over a top fighter is a poor way to go out in my opinion, especially if you're not the champion and haven't become disinterested in the sport. Why retire now?
He's sloppy, it stands out a mile he has no amateur back ground, he even made Joshua l;ook slick. It s like he was boxing with numbers last night , almost terrified to drift with any ideas, his bent over habit hurt him , he was told but couldn't adapt.
You can bet Sasha won't be on the thick end for the rematch. 300k buys last night, £6m gross. Let's assume at least 600k buys for the rematch given all the hype coming plus a possible crowd gate. Sasha should get £4m minimum.
