The value of Gene Tunney's wins over Jack Dempsey.

Dempsey was 31 and 32 years old for these fights and at his fighting weight. While it's true Dempsey was not in any 10 round official matches from 1924-1926 , he many exhibitions matches ( likely 20 or more ) during this time period to stay sharp and retain his muscle reflex memories.

Source below if you want to count them and check the dates:

Tunney owned Dempsey, winning perhaps 19 of the 20 rounds and likely would have stopped him at least once if the match had been 15 rounds instead of 10.

But how good was this win compared to previous lineal champions title defenses?

    Questions:

Were Tunney's wins or win over Dempsey better than any successful title defense that Tommy Burns had?

Were Tunney's wins or win over Dempsey better than any successful title defense that Jack Johnson had?

I would say yes to both.

Yes, I might be forgetting something important but I think both of Tunney's two wins against Dempsey were probably better than any Tommy Burns or Jack Johnson championship fight win.

Dempsey was good enough to put away Jack Sharkey between his two fights with Tunney, and that was Sharkey at the time when he was actually being pretty consistent.

I'm simply asking the value of Tunney's win over Dempsey, which I believe is underrated and chose to list two former lineal champions who I believe had weak title runs.

Care to comment on the thread, or would that be asking too much :)

I think the fights with Tunney and Sharkey illustrate how good Dempsey must have been in his prime. Because his legs are completely devoid of the athleticism they once possessed. The lateral speed and the driving explosiveness are both gone. Yet he hung tough and defeated Sharkey and was within a controversial call of stopping Tunney in the rematch.
To answer the question Dempsey's chin, punch and combination punching even in that eroded 32 year old body is probably better defense than what Johnson and Burns contended with as champions.

I agree with this, but Dempsey had fits vs mobile opponents, which Tunney was.

Who were these mobile opponents that gave Dempsey fits?

I can't tell if you are being seious with your attempt to mitigate his inactivity. He fought a mix of unnamed opponents and sparring partners. This was nothing approaching actual bouts or even training. I don't think his vaudeville performances or movies served as tune ups either.

I see what the OP did there, nailing 2 targets in the same post.

Exactly he managed to squeeze Jack Johnson in there, [a boxer he is absolutely obsessed with disparaging,]despite there being no discernible connection between Johnson and the Tunney v Dempsey fights!
It's good that he compulsively continues in this way, because the only reputation he damages is his own!

Personally I don't place a particularly high premium on a fighters best single win.

For example James Douglas has a much better best single win than Larry Holmes, but nobody would think to compare them.

This is true, body of work takes precedence, but the fact that Tokyo Douglas put it all together for that night means that H2H that version could not be dismissed outright against Larry ,imo.

If you had any brains you would see I'm saying Dempsey who you claim to be a fan of was better at age 31-32 than anyone Johnson or Burns beat in their title defenses.

You continue to give out BJs for free and make excuses. You continue to add to your double standard legacy, bad mathematics, and while at the same time covering your eyes to the facts that are pointed out!
