Ok, to start with I am a big Calzaghe fan, but at the same time I do not swallow everything he puts out and I feel that if he wants to end his career with a real high he needs to fight on after the Jones fight. To begin with I am going to look at the fighters that Joe should be looking at. The list is as follows. The winner of Tarver/Dawson Pavlik Glen Johnson The three/four fighters above all have different things going for them in my eyes. First there is the winner of the Tarver Dawson fight. The winner of this fight will rightly become the number two in the division that Joe is now in. If Tarver wins this will nicely fall into the golden oldies policy Joe has taken lately and for me Tarver will never be able to cope with Joe's constant punch output, just watch the Woods fight in which he is running around with his mouth open trying to get as much air in as possible. The only, thing Joe would have to watch out for would be the KO, and I can't see Tarver doing that. Dawson on the other hand would be more dangrous, however he is for me still a green fighter and Joe would be able to figure him out quickly. While in his last fight against Johnson, he was awful. Also, a fight against either of these two could quite easily take place in Wales. The second is Pavlik, who for me is over rated. Yes, he does have good power but if the fight was to take place at around 170-175 would his power be quite so deverstating? I don't think so, also another thing to remember is that Joe does have quite a good chin, its not the best, but Joe can take a flush shot and stay up, or get up straight away. For those of you that don't believe this look at the Kessler fight and see the uppercuts Joe walks right through. While, of those who cite the B-Hop fight, that put down was one of those that simply knocks you off balance. However, I am not saying that Pavlik would be able to put Joe on the floor, I am saying that I would be shocked if he did not get up. Also, another flaw I see in Pavliks locker is his fighting style, he is a simple 1-2, 1-2, 1-1-2, 1-2, 1-1-1-2 fighter (if he was european, everyone would be calling him a typical european fighter). This type of fighter is made for Joe as he would simply come at Pavlik from angles and stay out of range. Although, i do see why Joe is not too keen on Pavlik, as he is the only fighter for me who will cause him problems and also if he fights him in the States (which would be the only place for a fight of this size) he will be going into the lions den and if the fight is close when it goes to the cards, then Pavlik would get the descision. As for Johnson, if Joe was to fight him, it would shut up everyone saying that he avoided him with a fake injury, and it will also look good on the CV as he is the ultimate journey man of his era. Anyways, like I said before I am not happy with Joe ending with Jones. If he beats him as he should he has to go on just to shut up the constant nay-sayers. Also he has taken so long to get to the top it seems stupid to call it quits now (unless he knows himself that he is f**ked). Also if Joe was to go on and beat Pavlik and say one of the others, would it finally shut a lot of you up? Take it easy.
I doubt Calzaghe will even fight that many more people before he retires.. I expect him to fight one more time after Roy Jones and it'll probably be Kelly Pavlik, seeing as if he can get past Bernard Hopkins.. I would like to see him go out in a fight with Pavlik..
considering joe has never fought a proven world class fighter in his prime what part are you missing...?
If He beats Jones I would like to see him take on Pavlik at 168. That would be a hell of a fight and one that I would not bet on. I give him a slight edge against Jones due to a slight age advantage and more so because of Jones' recent losses to Tarver and Johnson. A Calzaghe - Pavlik fight would be great, slight edge to Pavlik if he gets passed Hopkins in dominent fashoin. However a 1998 Roy Jones vs the Calzaghe that dismantled Jeff Lacy would be spectacular.
you just explained perfectly why calzaghe never went after jones way back when. dont give JC his dues until he has earned it
The winner of Dawson-Tarver or Pavlik is where it's at. Either would work for me, but Pavlik would probably be the bigger fight unless Dawson can really dominate Tarver. Joe wouldn't get any credit for Tarver or Johnson, although the haters will still hold it against him if those fights don't happen.
If it's Tarver: He was a shot fighter. Never the same after his weight draining and BHop loss. Just easy $$$ for Calslappy. If it's Pavlik: Who the hell was Pavlik ? The only significant names on his resume are an over-hyped Taylor (whose claim to fame was getting two gifts over an old Bernard) and an exposed Miranda. If it's Johnson: So what. Who hasn't beaten old Glencoffe ? Tarver, Dawson, Hopkins... If it's Wlad: Give me a break, FFS. Didn't Wlad lose to Purity and some golf pro ? The man always had a dodgy chin. Peter had him on his back more time than $10 ho. He was never the linear HW camp anyway. Calzaghe should have fought Ali or Foreman or Toney or...
Nothing solidifies a resume more than fighting "the ultimate journeyman of [the] era." Just goes to show about Cal's resume...
Ya -- Pavlik just throws a 1-2. That's how he knocks people out with left hooks to the head, left hooks to the liver, uppercuts, and lead rights; cuz he just throws a 1-2 -- atsch Never log in again
We all know Calzage was avioding Ali and Foreman in their primes. I think he should fight a lion, just to prove himself
I am a big critic of Calzaghe's career, not his talent but his career, but yes it would 'shut me up' to an extent IF he ends his career by doing either of these things: 1st choice - Pavlik beats Hopkins (as I expect him to) then Calzaghe fights Pavlik and beats him (which I'm not sure he could, it's a 50-50 fight IMO- and there hasn't been many of them in Joe's career). This would be the best way for Joe to end his career, as beating Hopkins will make Pavlik a definite top 5 pound-for-pound fighter, and Joe has NEVER faced a young hungry undefeated top 5 p4p fighter in his whole career. 2nd choice - If Pavlik loses to Hopkins, then Joe should fight the Tarver-Dawson winner in his last fight. There is no point in fighting Hopkins again as B-Hop at his age no longer has the stamina to be an elite fighter. A win over Tarver/Dawson would make Calzaghe the undisputed LHW no1, and would be a great achievement for him. If Joe can win either of these fights, it cannot make up for his dire level of competition 1997-2006, nothing can change that now, but it would 'shut me up' to an extent as Joe would then have proved that although he never took on and beat the very best fighters of his era when they were in their prime (Jones, Hopkins, etc), at least he did show a desire to fight the best fighters around near the end of his career, and beat some quality opposition. If Joe retires after RJJ, he is a joke.
