The way Nathan Clev is being handled is everything that's wrong with boxing

I'd rather this fight did not happen. However, before last week's shambles I was interested in seeing it.

 

The Tony Bellew fight was good, and he deserves respect for that one.

The problem is giving him a world title so early.

He is from the same Crop of prospects as Degale, Gavin, Groves etc, so his actual speed of development is fine.

The probem is more that they have chosen to give him a paper belt, so everyone expects he fights the appropriate challengers. Cleverley is not at World Level yet, which means he shouldn't even have the belt.

His pace of development is fine, I just have a problem if they want to call themselves a world champion (which they do)

Why does he deserve respect for that one? Bellew had done NOTHING to deserve a world title shot. His best win was Ovill McKenzie, who knocked him down twice FFS. Bellew was supposed to be an easy fight for Cleverley, but Bellew did better than expected, and Clev turned out to be worse than expected. It was hardly seen as a tough "World Championship" defence when the fight was made.

In two separate interviews on Youtube Hopkins admits that he turned down Calzaghe prior to 2008.

Let's see what happens with Nathan over the next year. It's not his fault Braehmer pulled out. Cleverly has already defeated Murat the Ring no. 9 and IBF no. 1. Why don't the IBF make Cleverly their number 1 and we can have a unification with Cloud. But of course it does not work like that.

I'm not overjoyed by this fight, however, Cleverly only fought a month ago. If he waits 5 months for a bigger name then there is no fight and no 'mis-match'. Should he just sit with belt?

The goal has always been the Hopkins/Dawson winner.

 

Because they came through the ranks together, hated each other. And on the local scene here in England that was considered a very tough fight.

Normally when fighters hit World level they won't fight dangerouns local rivals through risk of losing your fans to them. For example Hatton Witter, Khan, Mitchell. People in north west were very happy that fight was made
