As I said Chuvalo was a late replacement for Terrell. I don't know if Corletti was available , maybe they thought Chuvalo would draw more $$$$?
The Terrell fight in Chicago was cancelled due to political pressure ,it was then moved to Canada, then that became dead in the water. That's how Chuvalo got the chance.
Ali had just made his," I aint got no quarrel" speech and was as popular in the US as Anthrax. Even with Terrell out and Chuvalo replacing him,Quebec,Montreal and Alberta vetoed the fight.
Who would have been altruistic enough to put on an Ali v Corletti world hevayweight title fight? And ,what would it have drawn?

Foreman would have killed Quarry? Don't be too sure about that. Consider Jerry's wins over other big, strong men such as Foster, Shavers, and Lyle. Consider that Lyle came very close to stopping Foreman, that Ali knocked him out, and that powder-punching Young knocked him down. Quarry's reputation is growing as more people realize that he was, for a period of time, the third best heavyweight in the world. Jerry was washed-up when he fought Norton, being prematurely old and out of shape.

No, I agree with the winner of the WBA elimination series earning the right to meet Frazier in a vacant title fight.

I disagree with the WBA tournament deciding an actual champion, it should only have decided a #2 to meet the WBA original #1 Frazier. I disagree with NYBC making Frazier v Mathis a title fight but I understand why they did it. The WBA dropping Joe from #1 to #9 was bull****.

I understand why Frazier had to look lower than #8 for an opponent though since the first 8 were tied up in the serries.

The WBA came out looking bad. Though Ellis was a good guy, who proved himself. Even if he struggled with Patterson he had proved himself the worlds #2.

Foreman avoided Quarry. He has admitted this several times. Quarry was constantly calling him out in the early 1970s and Foreman consistently looked the other way. You wanna know why? Look what Ali did to Foreman with the rope a dope. Jerry Quarry was known as a guy who was very good off the ropes and very dangerous from that position. Ellis' entire gameplan in the tournament against Quarry was devised around keep Jerry ring center and not following him to the ropes where he could set traps. Foreman was a come forward fighter who loved to get guys on the ropes and his people knew Jerry would be very comfortable there and able to land good counter hooks which he would have trouble doing in ring center. Id favor Foreman but I wouldnt count Quarry out. Hes the type of guy who against the right opponent could be very dangerous and problematic.

So, If Wlad retires tomorrow and the WBA holds a tournament featuring:

    Russian Chagaev
    Travis Kaufman
    Alexander Povetkin
    Fres Oquendo
    Bryant Jenning
    Deontay Wilder
    Alexander Ustinov
    Antonio Tarver

The winner of this tournament will need to fight Luis Ortiz for the vacant WBA tournament?

You mightn't count him out but the referee probably would.

Got to agree that sounds rediculous. But that can only be because this multi "diluted titles era" has proven that we can have a contender with the thinnest resume ahead of better fighters. Not so in 1967.
