Let's create the list of the weakest title challengers of these HW champions

Ali - JP Coopman. Never beat top-20 fighter in his life, had glass chin and poor skills

Holmes - Lucien Rodrigues. Well I know many people would say Evangelista but the fact is that Evangelista KNOCKED OUT Rodrigues 3 times!!! Rodrigues lost every round to Larry Holmes in his poor effort for the WBC title.

Tyson - Tyrell Biggs. Not a bad opponent, but others were better. Biggs was ruined by Tyson and was never the same, losing all of his meaningful fights.

Lewis - Phil Jackson. Despite good record (30-1) never beat any top-20 opponent in his career and the only elite fighter he has faced before Lewis (Ruddock) destroyed him easily.

Vitali Klitschko - Albert Sosnowski. Beat faded Danny Williams and Paolo Vidoz, drew with Pianeta, that's it.

Wlad Klitschko - Alex Leapai. Guy couldn't land any punch and couldn't defend himself at all against Wlad. Looked awful. Charlez Shufford and Ray Austin would've schooled him. The only comparable challenger was shot Mormeck.

Tony Ross against Jack Johnson. 1-7-1 coming into his title fight.

Think I'll ad Jack Roper to that list on behalf of Joe Louis and Pete Rademacher for Patterson.

Ross was better than first appearances suggest.

He was coming off a loss to Kaufmann, and prior to that a loss to Hart, but lets take a closer look. He beat the living tar out of Hart, but then inexplicably fouled out, very much like Andrew Golotta against Riddick Bowe.

You can see why he might have been seen as a credible challenger.

Damon Reed lasted less than a minute of the 1st round in his WBO title challenge against Herbie Hide.

Agree but was he better than O'Brien, Kaufman, Flynn, Jim Johnson? Flynn is close I suppose.

Certainly not better than O'Brien who was on a good run going into the fight, a run that included Blackburn and was only upset by a decision loss to Ketchell.

At least most of Jim Johnson's defeats were at the hands of Jeanette and McVea.

Kaufman actually beat Tony Ross and Flynn, as well as Twin Sullivan and George Garner. So, he was a relative champ.

Granted, not a high level contender but Rademaker, up to the Patterson fight, was sort of a career amateur, Gold medal, etc. Had been fighting for years. Plus wasn't he 20-25 pounds heavier than Floyd and seven years older? He certainly tried to make up for lost pro time facing Folley in his next fight. In his somewhat short pro career he had some decent wins, Chuvalo I think, and maybe another fringe contender.

In defense of Leapai, he had just beaten Boytsov, which was a very legit win.

Most people seem to have conveniently forgotten that.

Ross was a weak challenger but he qualified because he was white. He did have draws with Jim Barry ,and Mike Schreck as well as stoppages over Schreck and a faded George Gardner.
