Starts off pretty strongly, although I'd take Wilde over Buchanan. Lynch is definitely comparable to Driscoll or Welsh. But the Welsh are stronger with Calzaghe, who I'd take over the rest, so I reckon they take it overall The English list is strongest really, but the Welsh are excellent p4p 1. Bob Fitzsimmons 2. Lennox Lewis 3. Ted 'Kid' Lewis 4. Randy Turpin 5. Jackie 'Kid' Berg The only thing that takes the edge of this superb list is the legitimacy of the English' claim to Lewis/Fitzsimmons especially. The debate will rumble on...
I can understand Fitz not being regarded as English as he moved at an early age and never fought out of England but Lewis was born in England and fought most of his pro career out of England.
Who bar TFFp reads the Sun anyway; or takes it seriously. Thinking about it why are Icelandic men reading the Sun Newspaper?... There's better... no wonder he's so bitter...
Its no certainty that Wilde is over Buchanan. Different fighters, different weights, different time periods, me personally, I'd go for Buchanan as the all time best Brit post-war, so that makes it interesting. For me also, Driscoll and Welsh are a tier below Benny Lynch, 100%. Im surprised you think they are even with him. I would have the Welsh's top two as Wilde and Calzaghe, therefore balancing with Scotlands Buchanan and Lynch. Maybe arguably Wales top two is ever so slightly stronger with Joes tenure as champion. I feel Jim Watt and Jackie Paterson are stronger than Welsh and Driscoll as a collective. Just my opinion.
Its an interesting debate, but theres no doubt Wales for such a small country has done brilliantly in boxing over the years.
Absolutely. Even if they only ever came up with Wilde and Calzaghe and no other fighters of note I'd still say that they have a very strong standing.
For small countries Panama and Puerto Rico would take some beating I think both are around 4 million people.
Fair point gaz, but boxing is Puerto Rico's national sport, that place lives & breathes boxing. Imagine how successful this Island would be if boxing was our national passion? Scotland, England & Wales would kick serious ass.
I'm going to be shot for saying this, but I think it's great Enzo has pulled so many (relative) champions out of one small gym. OK shoot me down! I like him, he's...err... at least he's got a bit of fire... I like that....
wih out a douby.last year at one point ernzo had 3 world champions (4 if you count locketts wbu) but def . the scottish one is pretty spot on .if harrison had kept fighting and didnae have his porblems where do you think he would have fitted in ?
Northern Ireland: (1) Rinty Monaghan (2) John Caldwell (3) Freddie Gilroy (4) Wayne McCullough (5) Dave "Boy" McAuley If I was allowed to include Barry McGuigan (born just south of the border, but had the majority of his fights in the north) I would place him at 2nd.
