The Welterweight Division is Starting to Look A Little Weak...What Do You Think?

I said it was **** 3 months ago and got nothing but insults. Nice to see people are starting to realise it's an overhyped, overrated division that's only lauded as the best because a lot of Americans compete in it.

Its one of the best, if not the best division in boxing.

Please enlighten me as to which divisions are more stacked than WW?

When Mayweather, Pacquiao and Marquez retire it may become a pass the parcel division.
Brook and Thurman may become the top dogs then...

I don't think it's weak but it is overrated because of how many americans are in top 20, its the only division which americans seems to dominate.

It will be interesting to see how good are the likes of Kavialauskas, Spence, Zewski, Horn ,etc

How's middleweight? Jermain Taylor, a raving lunatic is a top 10 guy and beltholder.

Welterweight has one thing going for it: no raving lunatics with severe brain damage winning titles.

Super-middle? Wasteland other than Ward and a retiring Froch.

Light Heavy: Looking good, but more so because of the prospects so it's more potential than reality.

    Cruiserweight: Get outta here.

    Heavy: Status quo

In the lower divisions, 135, 130 are utter wastelands. 126 has a couple guys.

    122 is pretty interesting.

All in all, though, welterweight is still arguably the #1 division. Partly because it's magnet division due to Floyd and Pacquiao.

In short, not a well thought out thread.

Not a well thought out response, especially the first point.

Jermain Taylor is demonstrably a raving lunatic probably with severe brain damage and/or paranoid schizophrenia who won a title at middle.

He beat Soliman who easily beat long-term middleweight champ Felix Sturm. Twice.

Sturm recently went up a division and beat Stieglitz, a former titleist at supermiddle.

outside Golovkin, the middleweight division is pretty average, and considerably worse than welterweight.

The likes of Maidana and Guerrero (let alone Brook and Thurman who are borderline elite) are better than the Macklins and Geales of the world.

Super Middleweight is not a wasteland at all = Froch. Ward, Sturm, Steiglitz, Chavez Jnr, Abraham, Groves, Degale, Andre Dirrell,Anthony Dirrell, Ramirez, Bika, C Smith, F Chudinov,

and cruiserweight is a very good and exciting division if you actually bothered to watch it you'd realise this.

Yeah and he's not even remotely a representation of the Middleweight Division, and he was stripped of his title. You're stuck in the past its a new young very promising MW division now, its only a matter of time before it blows up, try looking a little deeper and not be such a casual, hopefully when Cotto is either stripped or defeated.

However when Pac and May retire no one will care about the WW division and as good as they are, Thurman and Brook aren't even close to being the draws they are.

I believe the cruiserweight last fight I watched was Lebedev versus Guillermo Jones. The fight was an abomination on many levels.

As for super-middle it has some potential, but largely unrealized. And it's hardly a great division where the top guy can't get fights.

Also, the presence of Steiglitz and Sturm on your list should have you thinking about Sam Soliman and the aforementioned lunatic from Arkansas.

Oh, so you're talking not about quality, but rather about what people "care" about. I don't profess to know anything at all about that, so apologies for entering this thread under a misapprehension.

How could you not enjoy Lebedev-Jones, it was a cracking fight..

and the fact that was the last fight cruiser fight you watched says everything.. you cannot say a word about the division if you don't watch it/follow it. :deal

Felix Sturm..top 3 middleweight for over decade,4 or 5 times world champion, won about 17 world title fights...How can you say anything negative about him..He's achieved more than 95% of the welterweight top 20 combined.

After the elite guys at 147.. Mayweather, Pacqauio, Marquez
you then have 3 good fighters in Brook, Thurman, Bradley

BUt then it just a huge list of about 20 average fighters.... all these guys like Guerrero, Rios, Alexander, Malignaggi, Khan, Chaves, Berto, Alvarado - they are all mediocre or shhit.

It's a good division but it is overrated...

Pretty much my view as well.

As for the best 112 is sensational right now, 118 is stacked, 126 is solid, Cruiser is bloody good and potentially brillaint
