According to the rules of its bylaws, under special circumstances the organization can appoint its current world champion in a division as Super Champion, an accolade normally bestowed upon unified champions who hold the WBA belt along with any other. The WBA felt that Margarito met those conditions to merit the Super Champion status. His mandatory defense will not be required for 18 months. In addition, Yuri Nuzhnenko, up until now the WBA interim champion (as former WBA champ Miguel Cotto was signed to fight then IBF champ Margarito), will now ascend to full WBA welterweight champion. His mandatory defense status and opponent will be soon determined. Pictured in the photo from L to R are Margarito's manager Francisco Pancho Espinoza, WBA 2nd VP Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, Margarito, and WBA president Gilberto Mendoza. [/FONT]
So, if I'm understanding this right...Marg gives his belt to Nuzhnenko, and receives this SUPER CHAMPIONSHIP in it's place? This gets on my nerves really. I'm about as big a fan of Marg as I am Paul Williams, but this is getting rediculous. I hope PW just unifies these belts, and lays the smack down on Marg. How many freakin belts do you need in a division?! Wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't a constant state of ducking other belt holders, and they could actually UNIFY!
Just another way for the WBA to collect funds from two champions. We don't need to know Margarito is a "super" anything...he needs to fight and beat Williams to be considered the best Welterweight...FUKK the belts!
basically... but it also gives other fighters a chance to fight for a world title.....i mean, it has it's ups and downs, but i choose to not care about belts that much...
Give me f*cking break. So Bob Arum put down enough hard cash to buy himself out of the mandatory fight vs. Yuzhnenko... for 18 f*cking months? :happy Great job Bobfather! What a f*cking joke that is. Yuzhnenko became the interim champ as Top Rank fighter Cotto refused to face his mandatory. Now there wasn't a mandatory fight for the WBA WW champ in 17 months... and now Margarito doesn't have to face one in another 18? That's three years! I wonder what other champs fighting their mandatories regularly will have to say now... promoter promoter buy me out too?
that's the downside of boxing...but the good side is that all these quality welterweights actually wanna fight each other, and will too.......the days of cherry pickin are pretty much gone :bbb :bbb
It only adds the confusion. For the guy who wins the "regular" belt it becomes a hollow victory knowing that you arent truly the man/champ.
glad he got that sorted out, fighting that mandatory is meaningless and a waste of time. I want to see Margarito vs Williams baaaaaadly.
