WW is full of talent. All those names are very damn good and always come to fight. The only one that i think was way overhyped was Williams. He is still a good fighter but he was being looked at as if he was the next Hearns when he clearly wasnt thats why i bet all my Vcash on Quintana. Collazo is still a top fighter. Another guy that gets alot of criticism is Cotto and Mosley. They say Mosley is too old and washed up so Cotto gets no credit. Mosley fought a hell of a fight and all that says is that Mosley is not washed up. He may not be what he was but that just tells you how good he was in his prime. IMO he really hasnt lost a step. Cotto is just an animal he completely destroyed Quintana and I see Quintana as being the dark horse in the WW stable. Hes got skills a chin and plenty of pop. The only overhyped fighter at the moment is PBF. He has to beat a top WW yet in his stay at WW. Judah counts but Baldomir... Come on Baldomir had a good year and thats it. Hes got heart but a lack of skills to compete at the top. Hatton is no WW as Collazo showed us and DLH is also not a WW so how is PBF still at the top of the WW. The most talented division right now.
The WW division is a solid division. There are two elite fighters and a bunch of decent to solid contenders.
:good Kudos! I think the casual boxing fan considers the division weaker than 24 months ago given the decline of Mosley, Judah et al but I agree, top fighters in this division with two of the best p4p at the moment on top of it!
Floyds not overhyped he's selfish he's as good as advertised. He's not allowing us the fans to dictate his pace. If dlh campaigned exclusively at 147 he'd dominate all but floyd and who else id like to know him and mosely will never fight again .Dlh loses to cotto I don't think so
Shane is 37 years old. His defense is poor, he's slowed down, and he he doesn't put his punches togther well anymore. He's still a solid contender, who will give people trouble. However, he's no longer an elite fighter.
When you said Luis Collazo is a gatekeeper that summed it up right there. There is no deeper division in the sport right now than welterweight.
Yet he gave Cotto hell for 12 rounds and even won the fight on many peoples cards. Here's another contradiction. Cotto and Mosley are dead even during the fight for the most part. One fighter is doing one thing better, the other is doing another thing better. To the majority viewer they appeared to be on equal levels at least....if one is elite, both elite. But once the decision is read, talks begin of Shane retiring and being way past his best What if the decision was NEVER read, what if for some ungodly reason they just didn't judge the fight and left it to the fans? Would you still be saying he isn't elite based off what you saw alone? Or do you need the scorecards of the judges to back up this claim?
Shane is still up there and I'm not doubting Judah either (at least not until after the two meet) but Cotto and Floyd are both in my P4P top ten list and are probably in most other people's too... neither Mosely or Judah are but are still top fighters!
Hoya gave Floyd a good fight, does that mean he's still an elite fighter? I scored the fight a draw. However, that doesn't change the fact that Shane is no longer an elite fighter. He hasn't been for a little while now. It's not easy to beat a cagey veteran. I thought that fight was a coming of age fight for Cotto. Just because you give an elite fighter a tough fight or even beat an elite, doesn't mean that you're an elite fighter yourself. You think Buster Douglas was an elite fighter just because he knocked out Tyson?
Elite 1. A group or class of persons or a member of such a group or class, enjoying superior intellectual, social, or economic status: “In addition to notions of social equality there was much emphasis on the role of elites and of heroes within them” (Times Literary Supplement). 2. The best or most skilled members of a group: the football team's elite. Mosley is among the best 3 Welterweights. Delahoya is still one of the top 5 best between Lt Middle and Welter. They are "elite"
When I say elite, I'm referring to a fighter's ranking amongst all fighters from every weight class. 154 is a **** division. No way in hell 3 people from that division are elite fighters.
Ok, I got ya. Then list your elite fighters. Here are mine - Real quick. I don't pay much attention below 130lbs so forgive me for leaving them off other then Mar/Vas. Rafa Vasquez JMM Pac Hatton Floyd Cotto Mosley Hoya Wright Pavlik Calzaghe Wlad
Take the highlighted guys out and you basically have my list. Calzaghe will soon be taken off my list. I would add Calderon as well. Mijares is also not far off from being included on my list.
