Carbajal did lack imagination but gonzalez was very negative and slick in that fight, it's no wonder carbajal got frustrated.

every time he threw a shot chiquita took about 6 steps backwards (apart from the 4th when cut and the last two when warring.

When carbajal wasn't getting off he could get frustrated easily and that's a knock on him. fortunately he could end a fight at any point if he lands the right punches (as he showed against arce)

 

Graham vs Basilio 1

I think this was slightly before Basilio hit his prime (1953-1960 imo) but Graham really put a beating on Basilio. Graham could barely miss and pretty much kicked the **** out of him. Basilio turned things around a year later in the rematch and that's when I think Basilio really came into his own.

Good punch variety shown by Graham also, he threw a lot of beautiful shots.

Incidentally I scored the Gavilan fight against him for what it's worth.

Great display against a great fighter (on both counts).

 

Graziano v Janiro 3.

This is the only decent footage I have of Graziano winning in his prime.

I think it does him jutsice, the guy was a slugger with no defence. He was willing to take shots to land them, confident his chin would hold out and his power would tell.

More often than not, that's what happened.

The guy would get outboxed by most Mw's labelled as greats, but there's always a chance that at some point in the fight he'll catch you and his stamina and conditioning meant he could throw many a shot to ensure the job was finished.

I really wish I could see the 2nd fight against zale but I can't find it anywhere.

I also watched the documentary "the final chapter2 with the late bert sugar. Brilliant it was.

I think noone is under any illusions about Graziano's skill level, we earlier discussed Khaosai and how he'd just try to walk through guys, Graziano fits that bill exactly, ofcourse he did it at a much higher level (cochrane, servo, zale) against a prime opponent at the top level he'd probably falter is my guessing, but he brought great action and secured some good victories.

HOF worthy though? not too sure about that.

 

Victor Callejas vs Loris Stecca II

Callejas throws punches a bit too wild....but he carry serious power in both fists...praise to Stecca because he took some heavy shots in the first minutes without falling over.....
To be fair, I like Callejas head movement.....seems good to me. Decent counter-punch skills....

Some rounds missing unfortunately......but Callejas landed some bombs and dropped the tough Stecca in round 6...Wow, later he dropped Stecca again with one of the best left hooks I ever seen !! Then it´s all over....Stecca didn´t continue....

Griffith v Paret 3

I think this is emile's best performance and the one that really shows off hsi combination of clean punching and mauling. His defence is quite strange, he's obviously very confident in his chin but he doesn't ship flush shots, he rolls with a lot of them and utilises partial blocks. so some leather gets through but not always clean scoring shots.

Aside from the knockdown round where a left hook did get through, I thought Griffith dominated. well in the sense he controlled the majority of the rounds.

His punching from range was brilliantly timed and very accurate, in close he'd maul and spoil, not really allowing much to get through, whilst firing big uppercuts and hooks. It looks horrible but it was very effective and one of his main tools.

Every so often it looked like Paret had found his rnage and for about 20 seconds or so Griffith would be stuck on the end fo his punches, but then he'd time a jab, land his own and maul away again.

the ending.............. we all know the story. the less said the better.

great performance though by griffith at his best.

I wonder how the napoles fight would have gone had it been non title at mw. I think going into that fight it was still prime griffith, but he hadn't made the ww limit in years so i wonder how much that took out of him.

Hagler v Hearns

This for me is the best Hagler ever and it took it out of him because he was never as good afterwards.

He was in there against what I'd perceive to be his toughest style match, that being someone that can not only punch at range, buit has height and reach advantage and has the power to make him respect it (atleast in theory).

The first round hearns actaully boxed brilliantly I thought, Hagler was stuck on the outside, maybe because of hearns or maybe because of patience, I'm not overly sure.

Hearns catches Hagler with a big shot that ironically hurt hearns more than hagler as his fist broke against marvin's skull.

In the second round I actually thought Hagler dominated, he blocked a lot of Hearns shots and really punished him on the inside. There were two body shots in partiuclary that really doubled Hearns up against the ropes.

In the third the ref looked at hagler's cut and asked if he could still see, he replied "I'm hitting him aren't I" after that small break Hagler was over Hearns like a fly on ****. He timed him brillinatly, landed a huge counter and finished the job.

Truly brillinat display and i think Hagler's skillset here often gets overlooked because of how brutal the fight was.

 

Overrated fight. Great first round, and then it's all Marv'.
