aye i've not watched this in ages, but i always thought it was a questionable decision as well myself.A good indicator of how far Chang had fallen by the end of his reign circa the Ohashi rematch classic.

 

Impressive stuff from Gomez. He was a lot more composed and controlled than I was expecting him to be. Not an easy man to hit with your Sunday punch. A lot of his movement reminded me of Orlando Canizales, the way he would leap and step from side to side to bamboozle the opposition. Lopez was completely outmatched. I didn't see too much evidence to suggest he was among the greatest composite punchers of all time in that piece of footage though.

Gomez had really nice punching technique imo, but his power a bit overstated back during his KO run imo.He's no Bob Foster or Julian Jackson

He hit very hard, but no more so than a fair few fighters that didn't manage quite so pretty stoppage records.

 

I agree that he had nice punching technique, and it's actually hard to fault him in any one area based on the Lopez footage, but I constantly see his name being mentioned alongside the likes of Robinson, Patterson, Chavez, etc. in terms of combination punching ability. I've never seen him throw combinations like the way those guys did.

Olivares - Harada

Horrible beating. Harada had no defence at all, and literally every left hook Olivares threw seemed to land. The knockdown was a thing of beauty. The referee stopped the fight in the second round, and although Harada could have easily continued, he was on his way to getting stopped in brutal fashion anyway.

 

Jung Koo Chang Vs Francisco Montiel I

CHANG: 3; 4; 5; 8; 9; 10; 11 (-1);

This is after the debacle in the 2nd fight with Torres. Montiel looks like he could've done with a straw weight division. Either that or Chang should've moved up to 112lbs sooner. The champ' takes a few rounds to warm up enough to swarm. The rounds cut off early.
Montiel has little too him bar a bit of foot and handspeed but he tried hard. Chang had to really dig the left hook in to the body over a few rounds to pin him down. When Montiel opens up a bit more later on in the fight Chang looks in his element. In the 10th Chang limpets the joint out, but uses the breaks to land a series of patented accurate right hands.

Chand tries his hardest to get rid of Montiel with a vintage burst of offence early on in round 11th, but gasses. Whilst he's in control he wrestles Montiel too much in stifling his man while getting a breather and gets a point deducted. That moment of respite sorts him out and he goes on the offensive again.

Montiel did the better work in the 12th, where both men clinched and wrestled ad infinitum. The scorecard does not really show how wide Chang won the fight IMO, but Montiel fought well for a guy reportedly only 19, even though he was very raw and I probably edged a two rounds to him as I was impressed by his showing despite the size difference.

 

He wasn't really a fighter who would take chance and cut loose with busy clusters of punches like Robinson and Patterson.

Porbably close to Chavez in style, but not quite as volume oriented.More of a precision sharpshooter who would throw in 2's(left hook body then head after a range finding jab etc) and 3s.Great effective combos

I don't think he really had the chin or the same willing to take one to land three mentality to throw with the same volume in combination Chavez did against very good fighters.

 

Didn't throw as many punches in combination but when he threw in twos and threes he was as accurate as anyone. Also, it's his accuracy and punch selection that saw him stop so many, as Lora said, for raw power Gomez isn't spectacular. He was an astounding finisher more often than not as well.

Harada was a solid contender by the way. Shows you what a monster Olivares was. You watched the Sakurai footage I posted yet?
