Talk to me about Saad-Conteh 1 and 2, Flea.

 

Of course. I prefer it to Lopez II to be honest but of Saad's action comebacks I rate the Johnson fights the best (the 2nd for action, the first for the maddest comebacks) but as I've stated many times one of, if not my alltime favourite fight, is Saad Vs Conteh I. Beautiful, exciting, diverse, satisfyingly close and not controversial regardless of which side of the fence you sit on.

Me? After the 14th I had Saad a point or two ahead so I think he pulled it back miraculously again, but for me I love the technical warfare laid down by both men.

It became even more mystical once I watched Conteh's prior fight (with Burnett) That is a completely shot fighter handed a gift. And then you see him against Saad and it's like he's found himself, he's loving in a bubble; for a short time, he can box close to his very best.

Says something of Saad when he managed to overcome Conteh regardless of his last chance saloon performance in that fight.

I watched their rematch once, years ago and will probably never relive it again. Going off the Burnett fight that's what you think would've happened in their first encounter.

Thankfully it didn't and we got a 15 round title fight that had a bit of everything.

Thanks for that, Flea. I was wondering how good Conteh was on the night of the first fight, that's all.

I just watched the Vonzell Johnson fight. Vonzell was a big dude, a smart boxer, and he seemed to dominate Saad in the early goings. Saad refused to jab his way in, and instead threw right hand leads which weren't landing. Saad's imperious strength would eventually tell though. I would have liked to see him use his jab more and setup the big shots.

 

Yeah, I agree but he was sliding by then anyway. Savage ending. Don't **** with Matthew Saad Muhammad.

 

If it had been a younger Conteh he would of pulled it off IMO.

Watched Zarate Fenech yesterday. Zarate was just a shell of his former brilliance!

 

True but he sucked it up didn't he! Done himself good IMO, considering how it ended.

 

Exactly my point McGrain. Even outsped, old and balding and taking an absolute shellacking he stayed in there and had to ability to tuck that left hand under the rib cage and hurt a true iron man.
