Tony Canzoneri/Jimmy McLarnin I

Excellent fight. Canzoneri definitely got the better of it. Did McLarnin utilize his lead left often? He seemed to abandon it but when he did; it always landed.

Epic body slam by Oguma

Oguma looked sharp in there - excellent performance by Shoji.

Come to think of it, has Oguma ever looked that good?

Very good movement - made Park look like Sam Peter.

And Oguma paid no attention to Park's fancy feinting.

Park's definitely wasn't prepared for Oguma's mix of quick movement, rough house tactics, occasional left hand leads and smooth headbutts.

The best fight of the series for me.

I think the 'body slam' was an araigoshi (spelling?) but I'll ask my Dad to confirm (he was a judoka in his youth)

I'm betting Park turned up to blow Oguma away and didn't prepare properly.

 

Those karate movies comparisons in the beginning of the fight were kinda embarassing - it's like these commentators were surprised by the fact that asian guys can be good boxers and are going to have a boxing match instead of roundhouse kicking each other and jumping like shaolin monks.

 

Probably worst commentary ever. Abysmal.

 

I watched those Canzoneri fights last night, McLarnin and Ambers. Anyone who says that those old timers don't look good on film need to look at Canzoneri. He can just do it all, these fellas are real masters of their game.

The good: Thurman has great footwork, hand speed and clear power

The bad: He had a old, small pressure fighter who threw less than 50 punches a round and let it turn sloppier and sloppier as the fight progressed.

As someone said of Mosley recent, he does not integrate offense and defense at ALL. He basically sets up his combinations and flurries and expects his opponent to either block (opening up some part of the body) or take the punishment. The problem is zaveck managed to land counters as the fight went past the third. Zaveck landed some decent lefts and rights as Thurman dedicated almost solely to offense at times.

It's a similar tactic to what Mosley and Khan did and it cost them at times.

Strong performance by Thurman but still some weaknesses imo

 

I used to have a low regard of pre-war fighter 'til I saw Canzoneri starch Berg.

canzoneri and mclarnin and Ross were fantastically skilled and you won't see many jabs better than the one Ross possessed no matter how many fighters you watch

 

I agree. And even in losing efforts.

McLarnin still rocked and looked good against Canzoneri.

Canzoneri still put on a show against Ross.

And even Ross fought much better (in the opening rounds anyway) than most people realize against Armstrong.

Yeah he was around for Tyson-Benn-Eubank-McGuigan era of boxing so he's good with that too :good
