Excellent writeup! I had similar thoughts (not very interesting, not particularly skillful, not at all competitive) but I gave Leonard more credit for controlling the range at which the fight took place through his athleticism. A lot of folks on this site grossly exaggerate Benitez's performance and the "problems" he gave Leonard in this one.

Yes, Leonard's generalship really really shines in this one.

    Jerry Quarry – Ron Lyle

Waldemeir Schmidt – the German Tony Perez - referee

1 Lyle opens like it’s Hawk time rushing Quarry with a right hand haymaker, round to Quarry mixing pressure and countering
2 Slower round. Lyle boxing, jabbing, big flurry in last minute for Lyle (round to Lyle), Lyle’s size and power a factor. Quarry would’ve been a hellacious Cruiserweight.
3 Lyle walking Quarry down behind the jab. Nice counterpunching mid round by Quarry. Close round to Quarry who is finding a rhythm boxing in retreat. Never saw this fight. Lyle’s heavy hands are looming ominously.
4 Lyle round. Quarry boxing nicely, walking Lyle into punches, but Lyle lands several big right hands.
5 Lyle finding a home for that jab. ****, these guys are better fighters than I given them credit for being. Quarry controls Lyles left elbow every time inside. Nice. Close round. Late rally by Quarry edges it.
6 Lyle seems to connect every time with the jab. Quarry doing nice work to the hip. I’m giving this to Lyle just because. Quarry seems to rally late.
7 Quarry more consistent. Intelligent pressure. Quarry doubles up on the right hand to body and head, sweet. Quarry’s round.
I’ve never seen this fight and I can’t recall who won. Very intriguing fight.
8 Lyle turning up the heat. Golovkin-esque over the top left hook hurts Lyle. Big finish. Quarry round.
9 Quarry needs to get inside and stay there. Getting the sense that Lyle needs to land something big. Trench warfare. Quarry too busy for Lyle.
10 Quarry back out at range. Seems like a bad idea. Back inside, outworking Lyle. Quarry round.
11 Lyle needs a stoppage on my card. Quarry doing what he wants this round. Lyle tiring. Quarry round
12 Love how Quarry grabs that left elbow and turns Lyle. Quarry on his toes boxing. Impressive. Quarry round.

That’s the best Quarry I’ve seen.
Decision goes to Quarry but they don’t announce the scores.

    My card:
    Quarry 1,3,5,7,8,9,10,11,12
    Lyle 2,4,6
The best I could see for Lyle is 7-5. Good fight.

    Eckhard Dagge vs Elisha Obed

Great fight, crazy how Dagge looks like Monzon in apperance and fighting too !
Beatiful jabs and movements, Obed was not bad either, dropped the german, Dagge was too good of a boxer in the end though.

    Bika-Dirrell I

This was absolutely not an easy fight to score. Most people probably think Dirrell won this fight, especially given the KD and point deduction.

Yeah, um....no. Dirrell completely gave away the middle rounds and final round; letting Bika control the pace of the fight, backing up, laying on the ropes, getting out-muscled and out-worked, and just not doing enough.

My scoring is somewhat ironic given neither fighter really "deserved" the win; Bika with his blatantly dirty tactics, Dirrell with his lack of activity.

    Rd 1 - 10-9, Bika
    Rd 2 - 10-9, Dirrell
    Rd 3 - 10-9, Dirrell
    Rd 4 - 10-9, Bika
    Rd 5 - 10-8, Dirrell
    Rd 6 - 10-9, Bika
    Rd 7 - 10-9, Bika
    Rd 8 - 10-9, Bika
    Rd 9 - 10-9, Bika
    Rd 10 - 10-9, Dirrell
    Rd 11 - 10-8, Dirrell
    Rd 12 - 10-9, Bika

    113-113, Draw

SRL - Dave (boy) Green and Palomino - Dave Green

Both fights ended in KO's so the score wasn't very important, I thought SRL put on an awesome display of both boxing skills and power, he finished the fight in round 4 with a 3-4 punch combo that had Green out before he even landed. But the Palomino fight was a better fight to watch, it was a back and forth war both giving as good as they got. The big difference was in round 10 Green got hit with a shot that closed his left eye and that turned out to be the beginning of the end, as he was stopped in the next round, while winning on the score cards.

Timothy Bradley vs Manny Pacquiao 1 WBO 147 Title

Live I scored it for Bradley but very close, dont have my rbr anymore. i know its a controversial call and one that gets chastised now. However, I always felt this fight was closer than Ledermans joke cbrd of 118-110 or 119-109 that he put forth. Lampley was awful hardly calling any punch by Bradley and calling missed shots from Pacquiao. In a first round dominated by Bradley for the first 2 and a half minutes Kellerman declared Bradley was winning the round only for Lampley to respond, how, or why is he winning, not able to believe in anyway Bradley could possibly be winning a round. Pacqiao lands 2 or 3 shots and Lampley yells boom boom boom 3 booms to win that round....bias a little?

I felt Bradley had a case in round 1 and 2, all 3 judges gave him 1 of the first 2. Round 5 1 judge gave to Bradley.

All 3 gave him the 7th all 3 gave him the 10th.

I think he received a majority vote in 5 or 6 of the last 6 rounds.

I felt as though Manny coasted big time being up 58-56 on 2 and 59-55 on another. Losing 115 to 113 on 2 cards and winning 115-113 on another.

I know CJ Ross had that horrible score in the Mayweather vs Canelo fight but the other 2 judges are experienced and respected judges and they had it 115-113 each way. This shows you how off the unofficial card that was all Pacquiao really was.

In the corner going into the final round Bradleys corner told him watch your defense. Manny's corner said end the fight. They knew how close the fight was

I feel in watching it again that Bradley had a case in 1,2,7,8,9,10,11,12. 1 or 2 official judges gave him those rounds.

Bradley landed his jab all fight. Manny landed very few jabs and hardly any left hooks. His body attack seemed non existent

Outside the left hand what did Manny land in the later parts of this fight? Outside of round 4 where Bradley initially hurt his angle what round did he lose in one sided fashion that was not competitive at all?

I think as I did then that 115-113 Bradley is completely ok

Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Tommy Hearns 2

I recently read that this was a pretty underrated fight, so decided to score it. I also remember reading that this "draw" really tore Hearns up as he was still pretty torn up to losing to Leonard eight years prior, and many pounds ago. Finally - in terms of a preface - I had heard that this was a pretty bad decision and that Leonard was lucky enough to walk away with a draw.

I usually like to write more detailed notes, but real life chores have gotten the better of me lately. First - my card

    Leonard - Hearns
    10 9
    9 10
    8 10
    9 10
    10 9
    10 9
    9 10
    9 10
    10 9
    8 10
    10 9

    112-114 Hearns

Three of the first four round were very tough to score. The 3rd was the easy one of course, with Hearns knocking Leonard down.

The 5th saw Leonard roaring back, earning the round, and making it very close to 10-8 (more on this later)

Gave Leonard the 6th, and Hearns the 7th and 8th, with the 7th being close.

Leonard won the 9th with a big left hand with around 25 seconds left in the round. I also gave SRL the 10th.

11th went to Hearns for the knockdown and Leonard closed the show with a big round 12 that I scored 10-9 but could have been 10-8.

Those big Leonard rounds that he had Hearns hurt but couldn't knock him down were scored 10-8 on all of the cards, and that's where the draw came from. During the telecast Lampley mentioned that there had been a big movement around that time to score rounds like that 10-8.

Watching the fight you feel Hearns won the fight, and deserved it. But when you tally up the numbers at the end of the fight, and consider the trend scoring had taken lately, you can certainly see why they arrived to a draw. Leonard all but admitted he thought he lost. He certainly never said he thought he won.

Really good fight. Every time Hearns was pulling away, Leonard pulled something out of his hat while at the same time Hearns got a little sloppy. Leonard also landed a couple very solid blows when the ref was breaking them that I think helped Leonard throughout the match.
