Joe Louis vs Max Schmeling II

Louis punches his way in with some stiff jabs and throws a hook before Schmeling can counter. A little wrestling not much done inside by either man. Schmeling looking for that right hand counter over the jab but louis throws a lead left hook instead and punches schmeling into the ropes with a six punch combo. Schmeling finally throws a punch but it's nothing- still he's off the ropes. Louis jabs and jabs again and there it is the right hand counter but Louis is like a river, you can't beat him with the same trick twice, and he takes a half step back. Schmeling is punching air. Schmeling is pawing now, not really jabbing, tossing or some bait but Louis is all patience and Schmeling had to come into range and Louis almost caves in his cheek with a hook. Schmeling is a little hurt and he covers up so Louis pounds the body, rips off a couple of hooks and uppercuts to make some space. There's a real jab by Louis and it's beautiful. Schmeling is waiting for another to counter but Louis feints a hook, Schmeling keeps his hands to himself for protection and Louis throws a one-two which both land. Schmeling spins out (he wants off the ropes) and circles but louis is there waving that right hand like a flag in the breeze. Louis punches him into the ropes but everything isa distraction, a painful distraction, as Louis brings a right hand over the type of Schmeling who's guarding the hooks uppercuts and body punches too much. He almost goes down and Louis, who possibly is unaware of the human emotion of excitement, rips him with several painful body shots; Schmeling literally turns his back to avoid them. Now that schmeling can't move Louis gets down to brass tacks and just unloads lefts and rights until the referee goes in for a count. It's brief and doesn't really help as Louis shuffles in and lands a 1-2 and Schmeling is on his face. Schmeling is up immediately and down again from another combo and the ref wipes his gloves off but the break means nothing. Louis isn't here to **** spiders and measures schmeling who tries to keep louis off with an extended left. Louis flings schmeling ' s arm out of the way, rips him with aright hook to the body, uses a hard left hook to shift his own weight, and brings the right over the top. It's over.

    Louis 10-9

I had it a little bit closer, but not by much.

    Round 1: 10-9 Nelson
    Round 2: 10-9 Nelson
    Round 3: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 4: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 5: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 6: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 7: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 8: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 9: 10-10 Even
    Round 10: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 11: 10-9 Nelson
    Round 12: 10-9 Fenech

    Score: 117-112 Fenech

I will say this, rounds 3, 4 & 5, which were fought in the corner with Fenech the aggressor. I would have no problem anyone scoring any of these rounds even or for Nelson. They were that tight. Those counters that Nelson was landing were intense. I just thought Fenech shaded those rounds.

Here are 3 more Jeff Fenech fights I recently scored.

Jeff Fenech vs, Daniel Zaragoza 10 rounds

    Round 1: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Fenech
Round 4: 10-8 Fenech (point deducted from Zaragoza for low blow)
    Round 5: 10-9 Zaragoza
    Round 6: 10-9 Zaragoza
    Round 7: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 8: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 9: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 10: 10-9 Fenech

    Total: 98-92 Fenech

I should mention that Fenech was able to get away with a lot of rough stuff and it was laughable docking Zaragoza as opposed for what Jeff got away with.

    Jeff Fenech vs. Carlos Zarate

    Round1: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 2: 10-9 Fenech
Round 3: 10-8 Fenech (point deducted for low blow)
    Round 4: 10-8 Fenech (scores a knockdown)

    Total: 40-33 Fenech

Fight is stopped between the 4th and 5th due to a cut below Fenech's eye. Zarate believes he just won and is euphoric and appears to taunt Fenech, who goes after Zarate. The funny thing is the ref Henry Elespru appears to follow the instruction of the Fenech corner. They say the cut was caused be a headbutt and he follows their instructions to a tee. You can even hear him say to a judge to deduct a point from Zarate if it's stopped (I don't know if anyone did). Zarate didn't look too bad even though Fenech was on top and that 3rd round was damn close. There was a long way to go and Zarate was landing those left hooks to the liver steadily. BTW, the cut may have been from a butt but would have been from Fenech's head work. I would have liked to have seen it go further. A cut under the eye wasn't that critical.

Jeff Fenech vs. Mario Martinez 12 rounds

    Round 1: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 2: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 3: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 4: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 6: 10-8 Martinez (scores a knockdown)
    Round 7: 10-9 Martinez
    Round 8: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 9: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 10: 10-10 Even
    Round 11: 10-9 Martinez
    Round 12: 10-9 Fenech

    Total: 116-112 Fenech

You have to give it to Fenech who really messed up his hands during the fight, but kept digging in and staying busy.

Fight 30: Canzoneri vs McLarnin 1

This fight show how much if a defensive genius Canzoneri was.

He got caught bad in the first but rallied to survive, and then in the next filmed rounds we see him out hooking Jimmy, beating him to the punch and more importantly making him pay every time he misses.

Really could have been a knock out if he had a bit more pop to his punches and those last two rounds saw him batter Jimmy around the ring.

Great performance from a great champion.

They referred to him as a 3 weight champion, I'm not sure how highly regarded LWW was back them so don't really know how to take that one.

    Fight 31: Ross v Canzoneri

No matter what I have said previous the best jabbing display in boxing history was this fight.

Canzoneri has great footwork, great timing, great hand speed and great punch selection. All of that was outdone by a simple jab. A very active jab on the front foot, no less, but that was all Ross needed.

Such impeccable accuracy and timing meant he was a master of range all night and Tony could never get a foothold into the game. Had a prime ATG ever been as effectively neutralised before this fight? I doubt it.

Fight 32: Duran vs De Jesus

    1: 9-10
    2: 10-9
    3: 9-10
    4: 9-10
    5: 9-10
    6: 9-10
    7: 9-10
    8: 10-9
    9: 10-9
    10: 9-10

What to make of this fight. One one hand you have the fact, the empirical fact that De Jesus seated Duran in the first and pretty much landed at will throughout the ten fights. You have the fact that De Jesus had no problem beating Duran to the punch and blocking most of the come back.

You also have the clear notion that Duran could not be arsed, other than a flurry in 8th.

Always has me in two minds this fight. On one hand you have the results of the rematches. at 135 Duran dominated De Jesus. But you also have the dishonesty of putting all of this fight on poor training.

Ultimately I feel De Jesus is one of the best LW operators in history. He proved he could beat Duran and thus most of those who would follow.

He also proved when Duran stepped it up, he had no answer.

My heart says give De Jesus all of the credit in the world for this clinic. my head says **** Duran.

Dr Jesus beats ever LW today and in most eras. war Esteban.

    RD9) 10-8 Whitaker
    RD10) 10-9 Whitaker
    RD11) 10-9 Whitaker
    RD12) 10-9 DLH

    115-111 Pernell Whitaker.

Pernell was screwed yet again. Threw more, landed more, controlled where the fight took place, and dictated the pace. The only thing Oscar did was act like a god damn cheerleader between rounds. Pernell didn't help his case by always acting like he didn't do what he wanted to do at the end of every round either.

    Fight 33: Blocker v Trinidad

    1: 9-10
    2: tko

Man, what happened to this Tito throughout his career? Constant movement, bobbing and weaving, looking for the counter openings and not just rushing in.

Obviously Blocker had been twice stopped before but I reckon this is the best opponent he beat at WW (let's not get started on the fight with Oscar) and he looked very good in doing so.

Between this fight and the Oscar fight he began to resemble a come forward plodding EE type fighter. Is that just due to quality of opposition, weight draining taking it's toll or had he began to slip?

I don't know. But the motivated hungry Trinidad from this fight, the one who still respected his opponent, the one who wanted to make them miss and make them pay, this Trinidad looks incredible.

Fight 34: De La Hoya v Mosley

    1: 9-10
    2: 10-9
    3: 9-10
    4: 10-9
    5: 10-9
    6: 10-9
    7: 9-10
    8: 9-10
    9: 9-10
    10: 9-10
    11: 9-10
    12: 9-10

Had to stop watching so will catch he second half tonight but I have it 4-2 for Hoya at the midway point. Don't remember this being controversial but unless Mosley turns it around I don't see how he's gonna win this one.

Round 1 and 3 Mosley put on a great display of ambush boxing landing big right hands over the jab and staying away from Oscar's power, circling away from his jab.

The rest of the first half saw Oscar stalking behind body work and imposing his strength and size. Oscar looks well in control through 6.

Second half of the fight is a different story. Mosley out jabs and out hooks Oscar. Too quick and powerful for the title holder to deal with.

    Awesome performance by sugar Shane.
