I just felt it was a bit tighter, but a terrific fight nonetheless.
Salvador Sanchez vs. Azumah Nelson Salvador Sanchez vs. Wilfredo Gomez For looking like he belonged in a boy band, Sanchez was a stone cold killer. Dude looked almost bored after these fights. Azumah Nelson vs. Calvin Grove Azumah Nelson vs. Irving Mitchell Azumah Nelson vs. Juvenal Ordenes Nelson was such a meat and potatoes boxer. Come forward, jab, hook, hook, repeat. Don't have to get fancy when you're fearless and rightfully so. Built like a brick **** house. Commentators say in the Grove match he'd run track with a 150 pound man on his back. Jeff Fenech vs. Calvin Grove Jeff Fenech vs. Samart Payakaroon These are pretty much the beginning and the end of Jeff Fenech as an elite boxer. Bullied Samart against the ropes and flattened him in brutal fashion. Payakaroon is often hailed as the greatest nakmuay in Thai history. He also captured the WBC Super Bantamweight title when he dabbled in boxing. He was pretty unorthodox. Fenech couldn't compete with him in space so he drove him to the ropes and absolutely mauled him. Grove was a solid guy at feather. Slept Fenech and gave Nelson a respectable fight. Slickster without much power to back it up.

Just watched this in full for the first time. I think this could almost be compared to Duran-Moore. Chacon the young prospect coming off a stoppage win over Chucho Castillo takes on the not old but not quite what he was Ruben Olivares. Ruben was coming off a couple of losses to Rafael Herrera and would lose his next fight, maybe his lifestyle, training habits were becoming a factor in his performances but on this night with a new team behind him he came in in shape. These two were familiar with each other from the LA gyms but Chacon didn't expect what was to come. Bobby came out and showed Ruben no respect at all and won the first two rounds. Olivares had a good look at him and then turned the heat on and from then on didn't look back. I thought he literally battered Chacon on the inside and the outside for the rest of the fight. Bobby showed a great chin and came back with a few good shots but was on a hiding to nothing against a genuine puncher who had the momentum. The corner were spot on pulling him out, he could of got permanently damaged in there.
Gerrie Coetzee vs Michael Dokes. This was their quasi-title fight from 1983 when Dokes held the WBA title. I thought that Coetzee looked big and strong but talented enough to be a title holder? Not sure about that. Dokes getting stopped was a surprise, he seemed to be out of shape and just not right on that night.

Sergey Kovalev vs Blake Caparello Round 1 Both men flickering their jabs, Caparello seemengly being the faster , but Kovalev the stronger, 1 minute and 43 seconds into the fight Caparello scores a flash knockdown over Kovalev, however Kovalev is not hurt and finishes the round well with some good shots. Caparello 10-8 Round 2 Kovalev starting to land jabs and straights to the body of Caparello, and that helps him score a knockdown over Caparello, Caparello gets up, but is too hurt to move and he stays near the ropes, which helps Kovalev pound Caparello, scoring a second knockdown, Caparello gets up, but gets dropped again quickly by Kovalev's onslaught. TKO 2 for Sergey Kovalev

I spent a few days watching all of Trinidad's IBF title defenses. Great lead hooker. Never thew a body punch that wasn't on the belt line (ouch). A bit inflated since he got to feast on scraps and then fight Whitaker and De La Hoya when he was bigger, younger, and had all the advantages. Regardless, hell of a fighter. Just never stopped getting after it, even after suffering some flash knockdowns from some subpar opposition.
Here was my score on the fight. Wow, we only agreed on rounds 1, 3 and 8. Round 1: 10-9 Davis Round 2: 10-10 Even Round 3: 10-9 Spinks Round 4: 10-9 Davis Round 5: 10-9 Spinks Round 6: 10-10 Even Round 7: 10-9 Spinks Round 8: 10-9 Davis Round 9: 10-9 Davis Round 10: 10-9 Spinks Round 11: 10-9 Davis Round 12: 10-9 Davis Total: 116-114 Eddie Davis The official verdict was unanimous for Spinks. Two of the judges had it wide for Spinks. IMO they weren't even trying. They had to be at the concession stand getting a couple of dogs and a brew. They should have just mailed their cards in. I saw someone else on this site scored this fight, so I compared my card to his. And except for the 6th round which he gave to Spinks and I had even, we had identical cards. Now that is good tight scoring. This fight is well worth checking out and Davis deserves to be pissed over this one, because IMO he deserved the verdict.
Me too. I had Davis by 3 pts and really did not think Michael won many rounds in the fight. A couple even but not many he won. And was he sloppy in there. First time I ever saw him sloppy & that is never a good thing for a boxer going up in age. But this always reverts back to the old axiom in the sport---follow the money. Then, go back and see how those decisions go. This even brought into play another axiom---watch out for those fights right before a big fight announcement. They do not want that breadwinner with a loss. The fight was similar to the Holmes Williams fight---I thought Williams won easily and Larry just did not win the rounds either. But they were building up to a Spinks/Holmes fight and guess what happens in the sport of boxing?
