    Lupe Pintor SD15 Carlos Zarate

Zarate just isn't doing anything early; Pintor is having it all his own way, almost like the champion is working on his mobility in sparring. A two round gimme is pretty significant against a fighter of Pintor's quality.

Every time Zarate comes square, Pintor just prods out a jab, pops him of balance. It's nice. Zarate sneaks the second though, and it's always worth remembering how deadly those relaxed looking shots are. By the end of the fourth he has them working nicely and Pintor looks momentarily disorganised; this puts him on the end of a left hook that introduces the canvas to the seat of Pintor's trunks.

Pintor looks angry in the fifth. He boxes well but probably drops the round due to some excellent accuracy on the part of Zarate who also gets to do some good beltline work after propping the challenger on the ropes. Still Pintor held those shots well. I thought Pintor did enough to take the sixth, his first since the second. Zarate should stay away from the inside.

Zarate's "wait and hop" is getting nowhere with Pintor who has his jab going. It's not a great fight, but it's absorbing. I have Zarate ahead on the strength of the KD after 8.

Zarate's just not landing his second punch. He's landing single shots but that's it and he hasn't got his jab full on going. I think he's won more rounds but these are close rounds some of them. Not the tenth; Pintor wins that clearly with a had left hook that momentarily shook Zarate. Great left handed work by both men in the eleventh, Pintor getting his left hook over the guard of his foe quite nicely, and working well with the jab. This is another excruciatingly close round...i'm going to give it to Zarate based upon a right hand in the final seconds but for sure could have gone either way.

I'm having a nightmare here scoring these rounds today. Should have went to work.

Pintor wins the fourteenth and fifteenth pretty clearly for me though which makes it 7-7-1 on my card, the KD the difference in a narrow win for Zarate. For me, no robbery. Pintor probably lucky to get it but I gave more close rounds to Zarate than Pintor.

    ZARATE:3,4*,5,8,9,11,12,
    PINTOR:1,2,6,7,10,14,15
    EVEN:13,

    *Pintor down

McGrain, your viewing of Chandler-Murata had me thinking of Murata against Lupe Pintor. Here is how I had it.

    Round 1: 10-9 Murata
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 4: 10-9 Murata
    Round 5: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 6: 10-9 Murata
    Round 7: 10-10 Even
    Round 8: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 9: 10-9 Murata
    Round 10: 10-10 Even
    Round 11: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 12: 10-10 Even
    Round 13: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 14: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 15: 10-9 Murata

    Total: 145-144 Pintor

Guys, what a fight! I recall seeing a clip back in the day of Murata against Chandler and I though he was just a big slapping type puncher, but seeing him in this fight in its entirety I have changed my tune. More of a clubbing puncher, but what heart. I felt like an Asian judge with all my even rounds, but you'll see what I'm talking about when you see this. An ebb and flow, a give and take that you won't believe. I didn't believe Pintor was in control until the 14th round, but then Murata actually came back to win the 15th on my card. I won't be surprised if anyone has differing rounds to me because they were all so close, but enjoyable. A really good fight and I have no problem with the draw decision.

How do you think Pintor-Chandler would have gone?

I've flipped back and forth on this one over the years. Pintor has had issues with the boxer, but his workrate down the stretch is unbelievable and few could keep with the pace. Chandler was able to contain the rampaging Gaby Canizalez, who probably had the closest style to Pintor that Chandler had faced. I would see this as Jeff getting off to that fast start as Pintor had a very slow start, but Lupe coming on in the second half working those glaring ribs of Jeff. Slightly, I would say Jeff. But ask me next week and I may say different. I think it would be that tight. And we were the big losers that we never got to see that bout.

In light of the recent anniversary of this great fight, I scored the FOTC.

This was scored on NY's rounds basis. A very flawed system because it prevents you from giving Joe extra points for the 11th and 15th rounds. Unless the fight is scored even, in which then it allows supplemental points, but only if it is even. It's like a tie-breaker, but employed with major flaws.

    Round 1: Ali
    Round 2: Ali
    Round 3: Even
    Round 4: Ali
    Round 5: Frazier
    Round 6: Frazier
    Round 7: Even
    Round 8: Frazier
    Round 9: Ali
    Round 10: Ali
    Round 11: Frazier
    Round 12: Frazier
    Round 13: Frazier
    Round 14: Ali
    Round 15: Frazier

    Total: 7-6-2 Frazier

I watched the Don Dunphy version, which remarkably enough had Burt Lancaster and Archie Moore doing color commentary. Lancaster was even up in the ring afterwards with a microphone. But regardless, a great fight.

Here are a couple of Albert Davila bouts. Against Carlos Zarate for the bantam title and his second bout with Frankie Duarte.

I loved watching Davila. Such beautiful combinations. I think he made a tactical error with the slow first two rounds. Zarate was a slow starter and that was the time to jump on him. Not crazily but to start firing those pinpoint combos through Zarate's guard when he was still loosening up. Oh, well, easy for me to say.

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Davila
    Round 3: 10-9 Davila
    Round 4: 10-9 Davila
    Round 5: 10-9 Zarate
    Round 6: 10-9 Zarate
    Round 7: 10-9 Zarate
Round 8: Fight stopped by ringside physician after Davila rose from a knockdown with a severe cut.

Total (through 7 completed rounds): 67-67 Even

The fight had really swung towards Zarate and the end looked inevitable. But one great effort by Davila against a great and feared champ.

The second bout between Albert Davila and Frankie Duarte. Man, what a fast-paced bout. Over before I knew it. 10 point must system in effect.

    Round 1: 10-9 Duarte
    Round 2: 10-9 Davila
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
Round 4: 10-8 Davila (Davila scores a knockdown)
    Round 5: 10-9 Davila
    Round 6: 10-9 Duarte
    Round 7: 10-10 Even
    Round 8: 10-9 Duarte
    Round 9: 10-9 Davila
Round 10: Bout stopped due to a cut on Davila's left eye

Total through 9 completed rounds: 88-85 Davila

Can't say enough about this fight. Loved it when it took place and loved watching it again. Davila felt hard done by as the cut was apparently from a butt earlier in the fight. But fortunes kept changing in this bout to the point where it was still anybodys and I would have loved seeing it to the end. Great fight.

I'm on a real Boza Edwards kick today. Here are a few.

The Boza-Edwards-Roberto Elizondo 10 rounder. All 3 fights are under the 10 point must system. This first fight is something else.

    Round 1: 10-9 Elizondo
Round 2: 10-9 Elizondo - I saw the first portion of the round and the last portion. A power failure in the arena took out the action in between. I felt Elizondo controlled what I did see and the announcer stated that Elizondo really 'sparkled' that round. So I had to take a leap of faith.
    Round 3: 10-9 Boza
    Round 4: 10-9 Boza
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-10 Even
    Round 7: 10-9 Boza
    Round 8: 10-9 Elizondo
    Round 9: 10-9 Boza
    Round 10: 10-9 Boza

    Total: 97-95 Boza Edwards

This fight was amazing. Fought at break neck speed and phonebooth warfare. Rounds 8, 9 & 10 were incredible, but actually, every round was.

Cornelius Boza-Edwards v Guy Villegas. It would remind you of Boza against John Verderosa. A young hotshot trying to take down the veteran, only the veteran had just too much in the tank. Villegas was all speed and got off to a great start.

    Round 1: 10-9 Villegas
    Round 2: 10-9 Villegas
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
    Round 4: 10-9 Boza
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Villegas
    Round 7: TKO for Boza

Total: (through 6 completed rounds) 59-57 Villegas

Although I had Villegas up at the end, never at any time would one get the feeling that Villegas could last. But still a good contrast in the speed of Villegas against the power of Boza. I think you guys will enjoy this one.

Here is his 10 rounder with Rocky Lockridge. BTW, I met them both at Caesar's a few days before the fight. Super nice guys.

    Round 1: 10-8 Edwards (scored a knockdown)
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
    Round 4: 10-9 Lockridge
    Round 5: 10-9 Lockridge
    Round 6: 10-9 Lockridge
    Round 7: 10-9 Lockridge
    Round 8: 10-9 Lockridge
    Round 9: 10-9 Lockridge
    Round 10: 10-9 Lockridge

    Total 98-93 Lockridge

Despite what appears to be dominance by Lockridge, every round was competitive. Two great warriors in action.

    rorschach51's scores for Dempsey:

Jack Dempsey 30 | 24 Jess Willard ATOS
Jack Dempsey 28 | 28 Georges Carpentier ATOS
    Jack Dempsey 90 | 100 Gene Tunney 1
Jack Dempsey 55 | Jack Sharkey 59 ATOS
    Jack Dempsey 90 | 98 Gene Tunney 2

I pretty much agree, though I think Dempsey was ahead vs Carpentier before the stoppage 2-1-1. There is a debate if Carpentier hurt Dempsey in round two, with solid right to the jaw. While Carpentier hit above his listed 168 pounds, he wasn't a true heavyweight hitter.

Carmen Basilio v Johnny Saxton I

Always wanted to see this one. My Dad attended this one in Chicago Stadium and always said Basilio was robbed. The film is not too shabby at all. Here we go.

    Round 1: 10-9 Basilio
    Round 2: 10-9 Basilio
    Round 3: 10-9 Basilio
    Round 4: 10-9 Basilio
    Round 5: 10-9 Basilio
    Round 6: 10-10 Even
    Round 7: 10-10 Even
    Round 8: 10-9 Saxton
    Round 9: 10-10 Even
    Round 10: 10-9 Basilio
    Round 11: 10-9 Saxton
    Round 12: 10-9 Saxton
    Round 13: 10-9 Saxton
    Round 14: 10-9 Basilio
    Round 15: 10-9 Basilio

    Total: 146-142 Basilio

Dad was right. I believe Basilio's bodywork had to be ignored in this one for the judges to go unanimously for Saxton.

    Joshua UD12 Parker

Very decent first round for Parker, arguably he won it on established jab, but I gave it to Joshua based upon the two right hands to the body at the end of the fight and his total domination of ring centre. But close round. Glorious footwork from Joshua in the second but I think maybe Parker just about out-flicks him in this round.

Third pretty clearly for Joshua, who landed a couple of have decent hard shots in this round. This is for sure the weight he wants to be coming in at. Unless he fights Povetkin, maybe. Monster jab in the fourth hurts Parker. Kid has heart though. Spre left hook and another body punch from Joshua takes the fifth. Doing well to the body, Joshua.

A lovely jab from Parker to open the fifth. He's very very stationary though, when he's engaging. What's he looking to bring Joshua on to? Just waiting for Joshua to close the angle? Good rushing attack from him though, gets messy, but enough to take the round clear.

Parker backs Joshua up beautifully in the sixth, lands a good punch, referee, who I would like to kill, interrupts with some total bs. But Parker gets the round. Which means I have it even after six. Bit mad.

Joshua lands a frightening right hand over the top, but only on Parker's shoulder, then grazes him with a massive uppercut after the referee shouts break. But the referee's an idiot, or was pissed or doesn't know the rules. Joshua takes it very close.

Eighth is a big round for Joshua, but the referee must needlessly split them three times and is on Parker's case a bit. I don't think different referee different result, but he's definitely hurting Parker's chances. He also completely ignores (after clearly seeing) about six inches of Joshua's glove tape flapping about. That's dangerous.

I thought Parker edged the ninth, hustled the ninth, so I have it more like Showtime's scorecard than Sky's I think, because I have it close. Joshua starts the tenth with a certain urgency, I think he knows he's not in total control, and the early work is enough for me. Parker is cut in this round by a stray elbow.

So I have Parker needing 11 and 12 for the draw. He's got what he wants - heading for the final rounds with Joshua still in sight. That was the plan. But he hasn't fought Joshua hard enough. Joshua's controlled the pace. Hard to gas in that case.

I thought Joshua edged the 11th and won the 12th, which makes for an 8-4 card. Interestingly, if you score ALL the rounds I deemed close for Parker, he could have won it.

    PARKER: 2,5,6,9,
    JOSHUA: 1,3,4,7,8,10,11,12

Here is the first fight between Emile Griffith and Benny (Kid) Paret. At times both these fighters shone, but then it would go into some heavy mauling. Griffith was best from the outside but would always get sucked into the inside where Paret was very strong and really liked working the body. I haven't seen a lot on Paret but he would have been a handful for anyone. Anyways, 10 point must system in effect.

    Round 1: 10-9 Paret
    Round 2: 10-9 Paret
    Round 3: 10-9 Griffith
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 Griffith
    Round 6: 10-9 Paret
    Round 7: 10-10 Even (mauling)
    Round 8: 10-9 Paret
    Round 9: 10-9 Griffith
Round 10: 10-10 Even (Paret was winning the round until Griffith hurt him towards the end of the round)
    Round 11: 10-9 Griffith
    Round 12: 10-9 Griffith
    Round 13: Griffith KO's Paret

Total through 12 rounds: 116-115 Griffith

So many of these rounds are so close that this was anyone's fight. Even those last two rounds that I gave Griffith - the 11th and 12th - so close. No one had really gained an advantage over the other. If anyone else had it for Paret until this point I would give a thumbs up because it was up in the air. Incidentally, the officials cards through 12 were one for Paret, one for Griffith and the last one even.

Here's one more to have fun with, the Gerrie Coetzee-Renaldo Snipes bout fought in NY back in the early '80s. I know I felt Coetzee was robbed then, but now I put pen to paper. The thing is, this is NY rules, which was a rounds basis so it isn't like we can score a round 10-8 if there is a knockdown. It's just a winning round. So here we go.

Round 1: Coetzee (scores a knockdown)
    Round 2: Coetzee
    Round 3: Coetzee
Round 4: Coetzee (scores a knockdown)
    Round 5: Snipes
    Round 6: Even
    Round 7: Coetzee
    Round 8: Snipes
    Round 9: Even
    Round 10: Even

    Total: 5-2-3 Coetzee

Rounds 6, 9 & 10 I scored even as they became sloppy and mauling. It was near impossible to pick anyone out that would be deserving of those rounds and I never like to choose on the basis of 'finding it necessary' to pick someone excelling in a non-deserving instance. So there you have it. Anyone else see this one?

    Antonio Cervantes vs. Wilfredo Benitez

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Benitez
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
    Round 4: 10-9 Benitez
    Round 5: 10-9 Cervantes
    Round 6: 10-9 Benitez
    Round 7: 10-9 Benitez
    Round 8: 10-9 Benitez
    Round 9: 10-9 Cervantes
    Round 10: 10-9 Cervantes
    Round 11: 10-9 Benitez
    Round 12: 10-9 Cervantes
    Round 13: 10-9 Cervantes
    Round 14: 10-9 Benitez
    Round 15: 10-10 Even

    145-143 Benitez

I found this to be a difficult fight to score. Depending on how one scores a fight has a lot to do with this. Do you prefer a light-tapping point gaining type of boxing (Benitez) or a lesser work rate with more oomph in the shots (Cervantes). I like good clean punching and this one straddled the fence for me and I found that I had to keep my concentration at the Nth degree for this one.
