    Kuniaki Shibata vs Victor Echegaray
    WBA 130lb title
    1973

    Shibata Echegaray

    R1: 10 - 9
(Not much occuring. Shibata wins with end shot and movement)
    R2: 9 - 10
(Not enough from Shibata. Great movement though.)
    R3: 10 - 9
(Brilliant defense from Shibata, but not enough work still. Lowblow from Shibata.)
    R4: 10 - 9
(Very close. Rounds literlly being won on one punch or flurry. Could easily score for Echegaray)
    R5: 10 - 9
(1 or 2 punches again deciding the round. Lowblow. Shibata more effective)
    R6: 9 - 10
(Literally won of a few punches. Not enough work, especially from Shibata)
    R7: 10 - 9
(Won off flurry. Brilliant movement though)
    R8: 10 - 9
    (Barely any clean shots landed.)
    R9: 10 - 9
(Lowblow again. Very hard to score)
    R10: 9 - 10
    (Jab JUST made the difference.)
    R11: 10 - 10
    (Bit more action. SO close.)
    R12: 10 - 9
    (Had Echegaray winning till end)
    R13: 9 - 10
    (Jab)
    R14: 9 - 10
    (Explodes after 13 rounds!)
    R15: 10 - 7
(2 knockdowns! how? Some bad calls from ref, though second was legit imo.)

    Total: 145 - 139 Shibata

    Notes:
    • A bout with a lot of set up, but not a lot of action. Chess match. Interesting, but not memorable except for Shibata's frankly amazing movement.
    • Echegaray workmanlike. Actually fights for 3 mins a round. Whereas Shibata works in spurts here.
    • Very hard to score.
    • Echegaray barely landing, but Shibata not working a lot.
    • Neither wanted to lead.
    • Shibata, if not so conservative, could've dominated in exchanges with his speed and amazing movement.

I've watched the Marcel before, but never scored. I'll score both of these soon Philly.

    Gonzalez vs Villoria

    R1: 9 - 10
(Sharp from Villoria. Classic Choco feel out round)
    R2: 9 - 10
(Choco more effective, but slow start costs him)
    R3: 10 - 8
(Beautiful. Difference between a very good offensive fighter and an ATG one)
    R4: 10 - 9
(Close, but Choco is a different level. More effective)
    R5: 10 - 9
    (wider for Choco)
    R6: 10 - 9
    (Hard but clear)
    R7: 10 - 9
(One sided here. Beautdul angles from Choco)
    R8: 10 - 9
    (Villoria very tough)
    R9: TKO
(Villoria is a warrior. Great body shot. Bad beating at the end.)

    78 - 73 Chocolatito

    Notes:
    • Beautiful performance from Roman. One of his best.
    • Masterful footwork, offense and defense blended into one. True ATG IMO, and would beat quite a few historical greats from 105 - 112.
    • Blocks, slips and parries, rarely caught flush.
    • Scorecard doesn't reflect the hard pace.

    Pipino Cuevas vs. Thomas Hearns

The Hitman at his brutal best.

Hearns is just landing huge shots behind that jab, the hand speed is very much top notch. He is just overwhelming Cuevas who can’t seem to figure out how to deal with the he length skill and power of Tommy. Tommy shows patient finishing skills in round 1 biding his time rather than rushing in. In round 2 more of the same this time Tommy is not quite as patient leading to 2 exchanges where he wins both but he allows himself to get inside of Pipino’s range for the first time. Tommy delivers a super fast jab to the chest back to the head so quick it looks like a single punch. Now Tommy has him hurt but measures him patiently this time....down goes Cuevas, he shows toughness in standing up, but it is waved off!

    Bobby Watts 1
    1. Hagler 10-9 CLOSE
    2. Even 19-19 (Watts 10-9) CLOSE
    3. Watts 29-28 (Watts 10-9)
    4. Even 38-38 (Hagler 10-9)
    5. Hagler 48-47 (Hagler 10-9)
    6. Hagler 58-56 (Hagler 10-9) CLOSE
    7. Hagler 68-65 (Hagler 10-9)
    8. Hagler 78-74 (Hagler 10-9)
    9. Hagler 88-83 (Hagler 10-9) CLOSE
    10. Hagler 98-92 (Hagler 10-9)

This was a horrendous decision. Even if you give 1,2,6&9 to Watts Hagler still wins easy. Home cooking at its finest.

George, I scored this fight about 3 years ago and had it much closer than you. Not that you are wrong, it's just in the eye of the beholder. Here is what i wrote at the time.

Here's one from our history books. The well-chewed 'robbery' between Marvin Hagler and Bobby watts in their first fight. Philly's 5 point must system.

    Round 1: 5-4 Watts
    Round 2: 5-4 Hagler
    Round 3: 5-4 Watts
    Round 4: 5-4 Hagler
    Round 5: 5-4 Watts
    Round 6: 5-4 Hagler
    Round 7: 5-4 Hagler
    Round 8: 5-5 Even
    Round 9: 5-4 Hagler
    Round 10: 5-4 Watts

    Total: 46-45 Hagler

I wouldn't scream robbery on this one. This was a Hagler still in his incubation period and Boogaloo was adept at flashy combos and tieing up. The tieing up really wore on the crowd though. They saw who was trying to make the fight.

George, I also looked up any history our posters here had on the fight and here were a few scorecards from them

    Natonic - 6-4 Watts
    Sweet Scientist - 6-2-2 Hagler
    SalSanchez - 6-4 Hagler
    Lora - 6-4 'either way'

It just goes to show that we're not in lockstep with each other and we have diverse views. i would love to hear Philly's view on this fight.

Good post, I liked Hagler pressing the action, Watts looked like he was trying to survive.

Give him the rounds I labeled close (which basically means I don't mind if they went either way) and it'd obviously be much closer.
