George, sat down this morning to check this out. Great fight. Was Ortega ever in anything but? 10 point must employed in Miami. Here we go.

    Round 1: 10-8 Fernandez (scores a knockdown)
    Round 2: 10-9 Ortega
    Round 3: 10-9 Fernandez
    Round 4: 10-8 Fernandez (scores a knockdown)
    Round 5: 10-9 Fernandez
    Round 6: 10-9 Fernandez
    Round 7: 10-9 Ortega
    Round 8: 10-10 Even
    Round 9: 10-9 Fernandez
    Round 10: 10-9 Fernandez

    Total: 98-91 Fernandez

I agree, Floro was a monster puncher, which made some of the scores a bit tougher. Gaspar would be boxing nicely, taking the round then Floro would bang in something to turn it around. Excellent fight.

    • LaPorte a talent here, but Sanchez is a master.
    • R12, what was that? Thought it was stopped.
    • Sanchez amazingly purposeful.
    • LaPorte too inexperienced for master Sanchez.
    • Fight more competitive than my scorecard indicates.

    Carlos Palomino vs Toshiharu Nambu

Carlos looking for a shot at the title, first has to go through Nambu. I know very little about Nambu outside of his name, but he makes a very good round and half. He has decent skill going to war with Palomino but lacks the power and chin to really make this a fight.

round 1 good ebbs and flows not a barn burner but a good action packed back and forth first. By mid 2 Palomino is taking control and imposing his will and skill. The final minute is all Palomino with 3 kds and it’s all over.

    Bruce Curry vs Monroe Brooks

A pretty fun forgotten fight or so it seems. Both guys seem to deal with fatigue and conditioning issues as the fight progresses but more so Brooks than Curry. Brooks seems light on the skill and is wide loading up on all of his slow lumbering punches although many had bad intentions behind them he just lacked the skill patience and accuracy to have the needed effect. Curry has nice tight D but even that seems to get poorer as the fight goes on and fatigue sets in. Curry definitely throws some nice short straight compact punches as well as mixing it up with solid hooks and body work. But as fatigue sets in on both guys from 6 on, even curry looks limited and brooks greater fatigue still enables Curry to land effectively,

Very good fight not great but well worth checking out!

I gave 3 to Brooks with everything else to Curry and had it 79-72 (with 2 being a 10-8 round). Not sure how 1 judge had it even on his card? I thought 1/4 could be even but still felt Curry edged those as well.

    Thomas Hearns vs. Bruce Curry

A young hungry Hitman goes to work on Curry. Curry tries to engage immediately but finds himself struggling with Tommy’s speed power and length. Not sure if Curry figures he needs a KO to win this but he is very flat footed and showing no good upper body movement like he does against Brooks or Benitez, and his legs a reflexes look diminished at this stage. I don’t think he would ever beat Tommy but this does not resemble the sharper curry of a couple of years ago.

Tommy 20-18 at time of KO

Philly, scored this about 2 months ago. here is what I wrote:

If anyone wants to see a fun shoot-out, check out the Bruce Curry-Monroe Brooks fight. These former friends had some dispute and they hated each other and wanted to take their heads off. I saw it live when it took place, but here we go with a scorecard. 10 point must being used rather than the California system (which they may have converted to at this time).

Round 1: 10-10 Even (was leaning for Curry but Brooks came back with 3 bombs at the bell to pull it even)
    Round 2: 10-8 Curry (scores a knockdown)
    Round 3: 10-9 Brooks
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 Brooks
    Round 6: 10-9 Curry
    Round 7: 10-9 Curry
    Round 8: 10-9 Curry
    Round 9: KO for Curry

Total (through 8 completed rounds): 78-75 Curry

Actual scores were 77-75 and 79-73 for Curry and 76-76. When Brooks boxed rather than load up on everything in an attempt to decapitate Curry, he didn't do bad. Just couldn't keep his head and paid for it. Good fight.

    Earnie Shavers vs Roy Williams

Came across this fight in rings closet classics....unless you are a glutton for a boring fight or HW’s this should be left in the closet IMO!

uuuugggghhhh. Have not watched many HW fights recently and I guess this is a reflection of why. The skill level and action is deplorable! Not sure how this is a classic anything? If you must watch skip to rounds 9-10 at least they kept my interest.

people talk about how out of shape today’s HW’s are, but the conditioning here is so poor I don’t think either of these guys could crack a top 10 list today?

Joe Louis is training Williams, but not sure what he trained him for? Perhaps to cover up and hope shavers punches himself out...and that almost happens so maybe it was the best plan after all!

shavers takes the first 8 rounds on activity and volume of punches alone. I was at least impressed with Shavers work to the body throughout.

williams exhibits decent defense and many of Shavers shots hit arms, elbows and gloves but he lands a ton because Williams really is not showing any offense.

williams has a decent jab, a nice left hook and the occasional (very occasional) right cross...but you can’t win rounds throwing 10 or so punches a round.

In the 9th Williams goes on the attack for the first time in the fight...but after 30 seconds he has punched himself out...shavers arm weary punching for the next 2 minutes...followed by a 30 second burst by Williams to close the round. Not sure if Williams took it or if I gave it to him but either way I have it 44-37 Shavers going into 10.

10 this is the round to watch if you must watch. Williams storms out, shavers has nothing on his punches now. He rocks shavers to the corner who falls face first into the ropes, the ropes keep him up but still the ref correctly ruled a standing KD 8 count. Williams looking to finish hammers away for 10 more seconds until fatigue takes over on him too. Shavers starts pressing with little on his punches but Williams is so fatigued he can’t defend himself. Now Williams falls to the ropes which keep him up...the ref correctly rules a 2nd standing KD and 8 count this time on Williams...the ref signals action and Williams falls down from exhaustion before they can even engage. It is all over from a fatigue KO!

sorry if you liked it his..I thought it was dreadful!

Lee Roy Murphy vs Chisanda Mutti

2 Cruisers going toe to toe in a brutal slugfest! What these 2 lack in skill in generalship they bring in terms of heart! The lack of skill keeps this from being a masterpiece level fight, but both guys are willing to exchange, and their lack of defensive skill means several big bombs get exchanged rocking each other. Mutti seems to have bigger one punch power, but does not seem to have the generalship or an educated enough jab to keep the fight at the range he should have. Instead he keeps the fight in close quarters making for some good exchanges, ebbs and flows in momentum and solid punching. He just seemed to allow this fight to be fought at a pace and place he didn’t need to. Anyway a solid fight among cruiser weights, that while I won’t revisit it, it is worth watching at least once if you have not seen it.

    1 Murphy
    2 Mutti
    3 Murphy
    4 Mutti
    5 Mutti
    6 Mutti
    7 Mutti
    8 Mutti
    9 Mutti 10-8
    10 Murphy
    11 Murphy 10-8 (Mutti 105-102)

which brings us to the 12th round that makes this ordinary fight, worth the watch.

both guys come out firing arm weary punches, but still have enough pop to stagger each other. Both guys on rubber legs so every lackluster shot puts them in peril. Finally mid round both guys land simultaneous right hands that drops them both for a count at the same time....sorry, only one rises to beat the count but you will have to watch it or read about it to find out who!

    Hope you enjoy

    Charley Norkus vs Danny Nardico

A surprisingly decent fight among HW’s from the 50’s that I know very little about!

a very good back and forth slugfest with multiple ebbs and flows of momentum shifts. Featuring 8 KD’s combined. Norkus takes control early scoring 4 KD’s in red 2-3, with Danny scoring 2 of his own in 4/7. Round 9 sees Norkus wearing Nardico down and dropping him 2 more times before the ref stops this one.

very entertaining scrap, that shows 2 guys who have better stamina and work rate than most HW fights I have seen from the past 50 years. As far as HW fights go I would highly recommend this one.

2 things did detract and that was there is no audio. I don’t mean just no commentary but no audio of any sort. The other both guys are wearing dark trunks against a dark backdrop with a grainy black and white video.

    Carlos Santos v Mark Medal

Good action fight between two game fighters. Didn’t score this but unofficially had Santos ahead reasonably comfortably.

Some excellent action here and was named FOTY for 1984 by KO magazine. Santos dropped Medal in the first, Medal returned the favour in the 14th. Santos boxed well on his toes and controlled the distance and the majority of the exchanges. Seemed to be on his way to a comfortable win before Medal scored the late knockdown but Medal couldn’t capitalise and Santos got his feet back under him pretty quickly in that round.

Overall, a very good action fight, but falling short of genuine greatness as the result was never really in doubt and there were some lulls in the action, particularly in the final third as Santos moved away clearly from Medal.

Danny Lopez vs Juan Domingo Malvarez

A short quick fight! Round 1 heats up quickly with Malvarez setting the tone early. A couple of quick combinations later and Red is looking up from the floor. Danny gets back up and tries to establish a rhythm but each time Malvarez scores to stop it from happening. Round 2 Malvarez back in control, rocks Lopez. Lopez delivers a nice right...and it’s all over. Lopez rises and wins again!

Thomas Hearns vs Juan Domingo Roldan

This is about as fun of a 4 round war as I can think of. The speed length and power of Tommy against a swarming pressure fighter that wants to get inside before Tommy connects. Tommy connects a lot, but Roldan gives a gutsy performance storming back from 3 KD’s to take the 3rd round and rock Tommy pretty good in the 4th, before Tommy ends this one. Very fun fight.

Frank The Animal Fletcher vs Juan Domingo Roldan

Winner gets to face Marvelous Marvin Hagler for the belt. Roldan gives one of the best performances of his life, swarming with such pressure that Fletcher never really gets into this fight. This is about as good of a job of one guy neutralizing the strengths of another as there is out there. Roldan never gives Fletcher a second to regroup, rest or think. Finally this ends in one of the most exciting brutal KO’s in recent memory

Roldan sweeps 1-5 (with 1 a 10-8 round) and stops Fletcher in 6
