Most of Hafey's fights are good to watch.

I watched Bobby Chacon vs Danny Lopez today, and with those two in the ring it could not fail to delight.

It is one of Chacon's more disciplined performances as he moves around well and counters with superb long precise right hands and left hooks on the more open Lopez. Lopez is constantly going forward behind a jab and a straight right looking to bring in uppercuts but Chacon does a good job of making him miss with his head movement and sliding away before unleasing some lovely combo's of his own.

Chacon is in charge but every so often Lopez manages to pin him to the ropes with a few combo's but cannot really land the hurtful shots to finish Chacon, and finally the attrition of Chacon's right hands catch up with Lopez and the ref has to save him after a blistering Chacon rally in the ninth.

    Chacon:1,2,3,5,7,8
    Lopez: 4,6
    Total: 78-74 Chacon (6-2)

    Dick Tiger vs Rubin Carter

Quite a surprising fight this one. Initially I had been led to believe it was an aggressive display by Carter who takes it too Tiger but get manhandles on the inside, but it does not really play out like this at all.

Tiger does manhandle Carter on the inside but the inside stuff is kept to a minimum by Carter. Tiger, a usual, looks to stalk behind his high guard and keep the pressure on before snapping into action hen he sees an opening. He did this very effectively as his pouncing let hook dropped Carter 3 times in the fight. I was also really impressed with the way Tiger picked off the shots coming towards him, with his gloves.. Very under looked facet of his game IMO.

Carter was the revelation in this fight though. Everyone makes him out to be a stone-cold slugger but in this fight he shows the makings of a very good boxer-puncher with the emphasis on boxer, believe it or not.

Early on Carter realises he wont be able to punch with Tiger and looks to take a more measured approach as he uses good lateral movement and a nice jab to look for openings in Tigers guard, and when Tiger does attack Carter was at times able to fire back with some lovely long right hand counters.

Both guys really impressed me in this. Tiger was superb in it, though.

    Tiger: 1,2,3,4,6,8,9,10
    Carter:5,7
    Total: 98-89 Tiger (8-2)

    Miguel Canto vs Antonio Avelar

Cracking wee fight this. Seriously it is a belter.

From the outset Canto looks to take a more aggressive approach to his work and does so with fairly good success in the first few rounds but he does realise that Avelar is a good fighter and a tough cookie and he can't get away with this. So he reverts back to his usual style in the mid rounds.

Its the last 5 rounds that make this fight though as Canto stands in front of Avelar and trades with him at times. Canto lands some superb shots and rocks Avelar a couple of times. You definitely know Canto is Mexican in this fight.

Canto had definitely lost a step at this stage he just appears to be a second too slow at times, then the next he does some amazing move defensively. I also think he made it a bit more of a fight because his stamina was lessening and he wanted to make it a bit easier so got inside and fought it in there instead.

Avelar despite being green showed the makings of a solid boxer-puncher, he used his jab fairly well as a feint to set up bigger power shots and he was clever in forgetting the head and going to the body when Canto stood still. Once he did land he mixed up his shots well to keep the hurt on Canto, and although he was well beaten I was fairly impressed.

Seriously, if you aint seen this, watch it!

    Canto: 1,2,3,5,6,7,8,11,12,13,14,15
    Avelar: 4,9,10
    Total: 147-138 Canto (12-3)

    Never seen Canto-Avelar, sounds awesome.

I watched Israel Vasquez TKO12 Jose Luis Valbuena. This is a really disciplined performance from Vasquez, maybe his best performance pre-Marquez from that point of view. He keeps his jab working, a punch he is sometimes guilty of under-using, and he mixes it up well from body to head. Valbuena is a willing enough foil to be fair, but he is a southpaw with a good straight and had only been beaten by Barrera and Ortega at this point in his career.

Valbuena lands multiple low blows and eventually has a point docked for it, but these blows do take some steam out of Vasquez, who starts to get untidey midway through. He stays busy enough to break Valbuena down though, and inspite of a difficult and exciting 11th stops his man, perhaps a tad prematurely, in the 12th. A good fight, but not as good as I remember it...was planning to upload it but after a re-watch I probably won't bother unless anyone is desperate to see it. Don't just say yes beause it's boxing! I'll upload something else if I don't upload this one.

You should check out Avelar vs Canto at some point. Nice to see Canto in an aggressive mood, some lovely Locche-esque stuff inside the pocket.

Whats your thoughts on Avelar? I know you have uploaded a wee bit on YouTube of him.

Just finished Qawi-Eddie Davis; good, action filed contest. Qawi floors Davis hard at the end of the first, and of course Ferdie Pacheco does his "Oh, the humanity!! Stop the fight!!" thing.

Davis, to his credit, battles back, meeting the shorter Qawi in the trenches and scoring well, particularly with the uppercut. Qawi's nose is bloodied in the third, and it seems to distract him for a few rounds, allowing Davis to build momentum.

After the 7th, he begins to fade just a little, and Qawi, while not at his sharpest, begins to score heavily again. Davis is badly hurt at the end of the tenth, but is allowed out for the 11th, where Qawi floors him quickly, forcing the stoppage.

My scorecard at the time of the stoppage:

    Round 1... Qawi 10-8
    Round 2... Qawi 10-9
    Round 3...Davis 10-9
    Round 4...Qawi 10-9
    Round 5...Davis 10-9
    Round 6...Davis 10-9
    Round 7...Davis 10-9
    Round 8...Qawi 10-9
    Round 9...Qawi 10-9
    Round 10...Qawi 10-9

Was watching Chacon vs Edwards II the other day and I thought Pacheco is a bit keen to step into fights to have them stopped.

^There's a lot of freezing going on from what I can tell from the early goings. Great upload, though, once you get it running properly.

I doubt it will be completely smooth, just as long as it isn't skipping seconds at a time or completely crashing halfway through a round.

    Edit: Nevermind. Running perfectly now.

As a note on the fight, I can already tell this one's going to be a doozy to score. I gave Kalambay the first, Kalule the second, with the third round being an either way type round, although I'd probably have given it narrowly to Kalambay like the first.

Damn! I'm excited about this. I'm expecting near Leonard/Benitez levels of technical skill.
