just finally watched this, I thought Rose won it well after a bad start. Sakurai was in complete control over the first 5 rounds and that is probably why he was an olympic gold medallist but Rose found his range in the 6th and stayed in control from there onwards though most rounds were pretty close. Sakurai was always dangerous with the left hand down the pipe (second round knockdown). Lionel got stronger as the fight progressed and though he didn't always find the target had Sakurai under pressure with his workrate. Lionels body punching impressed me and I thought Sakurai was looking a bit tired from the 13th onwards.

I like the Rose vs Sakurai fight, might give it a watch this weekend

 

Its a top fight..Sakurai was excellent boxer.

 

I'm sure it was debated to death back then but I watched Barrera - Morales I tonight after some DVDs arrived. First time I've seen it since seeing it live what seems like a loooooooooong time ago. I had it 115-113 for Barrera. I felt throughout that Morales had more to be concerned about. Great fight, one of the best.

 

Idiot that I am, I thought that I'd subject myself to Marquez-John having never watched it for a second time so far since 2004, and it wasn't quite as awful as I first thought (though still not good, as good fights go).

I remember thinking it was an absolute robbery back then with the subsequent passage of time lulling me into the mindset that my admiration for Marquez might have blinded me a bit. But it didn't. ****ing horrible decision even if you take the point deductions into account (I still had Marquez winning 117-112).

John pressed quietly forward early doors, got countered quite comprehensively with Marquez looking pretty good, before basically backpedalling completely out of range for the rest of the fight throwing occasional potshots and lunging combinations that generally missed or glanced. Marquez himself resorted to lunging awkwardly half the time to try and get into range with John landing the occasional counter in response, but Marquez's counterpressure, if you can call it that, saw him landing just about all of the fight's notable effective blows in his typical style; that is, when the ref wasn't giving him grief for mainly non-existent low blows that generally came about when John was leaping away, the waistline on his trunks being too high. I think Marquez was admonished at one point for hitting him somewhere under the armpit....

Anyway, appalling decision. I've not watched many of John's other title fights but it must say something about the times we live in that he's been able to defend a 'world title' a dozen or so times over 6 years. I was reminded a little bit at times of a (considerably) poor man's Pone Kingpetch. With the dodgy decision(s) to boot.

Right, off to watch Collins-Kalambay in a bit.

I watched the first clash between Simon Brown and Tyrone Trice this evening, held in Apr 1988 in northern France. A really, really good contest. Trice looked a massive welterweight and bossed the early stages, a second round knockdown helped him get probably five points up after four rounds. The fifth was a bit closer and from that point it was almost all Brown. How Trice survived the 12th and 13th I have no idea. What a tough guy - and he nearly saw the 14th out too, albeit helped by some liberal refereeing, but by then he was a good six or seven points behind. What became of him? In those early rounds, some recklessness aside, he really looks like something.

A little hidden Youtube gem I recommend to you all. No sign of the rematch though, which appears from Boxrec to have been a simpler task for Brown.

Edit - I suspect his would have been one of the very last fights scheduled for 15 rounds, no? It was for the IBF title; the IBF I understand were the last organisation to go to 12.

 

I appreciate you mentioning this; one from my era I haven't seen yet, and I need to. I remember reading the magazines back then about what a scrap it was......I'll look that up on youtube tonight.

 

Watched Joey Giardello's fight with the exciting Gil Turner.

Turner was probably never in a bad fight. He started fast as usual and brought the fight to the counter-punching Giardello, but surprisingly Giardello was able to hurt Turner in the late rounds and took over from that point onwards. Joey was usually known for running out of gas at this stage in his career, but he must have trained more than usual for this fight. Turner, from the looks of this fight, may have beaten a less than his best Giardello, unfortunately it wasn't to be for him.

 

I watched this fight today also. I agree with your analysis completely.

Bobby Chacon vs Jose Luis Martin Del Campo II

A good fight from the aftermath of Chacon's destruction the first time around against Olivares. Chacon was on the comeback trail with one victory already after the Olivares loss and now wanted to take on the first guy to ever drop him, Del Campo in a rematch.

This is actually a really tricky fight for Chacon. Del Campo started off better, he had nice fundamentals and movement and showed a snappy jab and landed some lovely looping counter shots, Chacon for his part looked in controll and when he let his hands go he shook Del Campo, but he never kept any sustained work up and tended to coast. Allowing Del Campo to outwork him in the rounds and get a considerable lead into the 8th IMO.

In the 8th Chacon upped his game and put some hurt on del Campo, but del Campo was tough and fired back but it set up the finish in the ninth when Chacon shot him down with a straight right and the ref called it.

It was weird as Chacon was coming off a loss, and he seemed relaxed and controlled but just did not want to exert himself. You would think this guy was undefeated and had been fighting too much soft opposition, rather than coming off a hard loss. Really odd on Chacon's part IMO, I would have expected him to be either gun-shy or looking to prove a point, and he really did neither until the ninth when he proved his point.

Johnny Bratton W SD 10 Vic Cardell

Excellent fight this. The quality shots came from Bratton but the heavier workload was all Cardell. I had Cardell winning the 1st 4 rounds on workrate alone before Bratton scored big in the 5th with an overhand right hand that staggered Vic and had him on the defensive for the remainder of the round as Johnny pressed his advantage.

From then on it was back and forth with Bratton scoring with an effective jab and strong right hands and Cardell working the left hook and strafing rights. The crowd didn't like the scoring or end result and I have to agree that Cardell seemed unlucky not to get the nod.

Still, if you like solid action fights between a classy boxer and a workhorse then this should please.

If anyone has footage of Cardell's fight with Gil Turner please let me know. Also looking for any of Bratton's fights versus Beau Jack, Ike Williams, Ralph 'Tiger' Jones or Holly Mims.
