My favourite Canto performace, sheer dominance through skill. It's brilliant to watch. If you wan see El Maestro at his peak, look no further (unless you're looking for Betulio González 2, or Antonio Avelar), absolutely textbook performance in hooking off the jab, pivots and range-management. It's so fun to watch him fight off the ropes. It's like he's a yo-yo, bouncing around.

Kimio wasn't dealt a good hand in life... imagine being 5'4" and having the same reach as someone 5'.

Rough identified the opponent for me, since the video has no mention of him (well it probably does, I just don't speak Spanish). :D

Here is a fight I missed back when it aired. I recall coming into the house and seeing the knockout (actually the replay of the KO), but missing the whole fight. Calvin Grove v Bernard Taylor for Grove's USBA 130 lb. title.

    Round 1: 10-9 Taylor
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Taylor
    Round 4: 10-9 Taylor
    Round 5: 10-9 Grove
    Round 6: 10-9 Taylor
    Round 7: 10-9 Taylor
    Round 8: 10-10 Even
    Round 9: 10-9 Grove
    Round 10: 10-9 Grove
Round 11: The fight is stopped after Taylor decks Grove twice.

Total (through 10 completed rounds): 97-95 Taylor

Now, to begin, I'm obviously at odds with the judges who had it 97-95 and 97-92 for Grove and one for 95-95. Although it was very fast moving and Grove was very sharp I felt Taylor's shots were more authoritative. Perhaps it had a different look at ringside, but this is how I saw it. Good fight.

    Erik Morales v Manny Pacquiao

Great fight between two ATGs - I had it a draw but I did feel that Morales did the cleaner work overall and deserved the win. He seemed like the heavier hitter in there too.

Jabs and straight rights were the key for Morales while Pacquiao's speed and combinations kept him in the fight. Thankfully for Morales, his last round gamble to switch southpaw and go toe to toe didn't cost him victory on the judges scorecards like it did on mine, but it's why we love him.

Unfortunately, this was pretty much the last great performance from El Terrible before the rematches with Pacquiao beat the remainder of his prime from him.

    1 9-10 (great opening round)
    2 9-10 (close)
    3 10-9 (close)
    4 10-9
    5 10-9
    6 9-10
    7 10-9
    8 10-9 (close)
    9 9-10
    10 9-10 (close)
    11 10-9
    12 9-10 (great final round)

    114-114

Just watched most of the first Griffith-Tiger bout in 1966. Round 1 was a bit abbreviated and round five was missing entirely. Here's how I had it...

    1. Griffith
    2. Griffith
    3. Tiger
    4. Tiger
    5. N/A
    6. Griffith
    7. Griffith
    8. Griffith
    9. Griffith (10-8)
    10. Tiger
    11. Tiger
    12. Griffith
    13. Griffith
    14. Tiger
    15. Tiger

Relatively close. Not a great fight. Griffith was uncanny in his ability to make a potential good fight a bore, but that's to his credit here. He used his legs very well here, but never ran. He circled mostly to his left, away from Tiger's patented leaping left hook, but even when in the trenches, managed to hold his own. Tiger looked hesitant and slow. Much of that was due to Griffith's excellent movement but Tiger did look flat.

    Lionel Rose vs Fighting Harada

    Rose : Harada

    1: 10 - 9
    Beautiful start from Rose.
    2: 10 - 9
Rose extremely quick on the draw.
    3: 9 - 10
    Lovely right hands from Harada
    4: 10 - 9
    Close, great action.
    5: 10 - 10
    Close. Lots of in fighting.
    6: 9 - 9
    Point deduction for Rose
    7: 10 - 10
Both glancing, with some good shots.
    8: 10 - 10
Rose sharp at end, but his inactivity cost him the round.
    9: 10 - 8
Harada down on a perfectly timed right hand.
    10: 10 - 9
    Rose laying back, countering.
    11: 10 - 9
    Nasty round.
    12: 9 - 10
    Harada quite slick here.
    13: 9 - 10
    Rose slowing, Harada showing skills.
    14: 10 - 9
    Harada hurt.
    15: 10 - 9
They left it in the ring.

    TOTAL: 146 - 140 ROSE

    Notes:
Great, under the radar fight. Rose's size and strength was the key difference here.

What the **** are these KO tallies??? Zamora's was 28-0 with 28 KOs and Zárate's was 46-0 with 45! That's mad!

What the **** was that in the first.
And at the end there was a scrap!! What was going on?

4 awesome rounds and a very good fight, but not an ATG one like I've seen some claim. Excellent performance from Zárate. I had it

    even TOS.

Round 1: Zamora 10-9, clear. Alfonso hopping, moving in on the front-foot, working behind a jab and a high-guard. Out of nowhere, some guy in his pants vaults the ropes and looks bewildered as security come and remove him from the ring, and presumably the venue, forcefully. The pair tactfully traded for the rest of the round, Zamora's shots were cleaner and more frequent.

Round 2: Zamora 10-9, close. Both men landing clean and throwing bare. Zamora doing more of both and using his head-movement to set up counters and get under Zárate's arms.

Round 3: Zárate 10-8, clear. Zárate's ferocious power getting to Zamora late, who, bless him, fought his heart out to get back into it but it wasn't enough.

    Round 4: Zárate TKO.

Ugly fight but dominant performance from Callum. Spectacularly short hook to get the KO too. Although, if we're honest, Willbeforce wasn't the man of his own house. Brilliant job from the referee, though.

    Wilfredo Gomez W12 Juan Laporte

    1. Gomez close. He's rocked a couple times by rights by Laporte.

    4. Gomez
    5. Laporte ( hey, there ya go kid)

    10. Gomez
    11. Laporte
    12. Gomez

118-110 Gomez. His last great performance, though in truth it's easy to look great against a heavy bag. Laporte was the bigger, stronger, heavier-hitting man but just wouldn't punch. He let the preening, strutting, taunting Gomez do essentially whatever he wanted. Gomez as usual showed his two-fisted arsenal and exhibited great control of distance. Pretty one-sided.

Kennedy McKinney v Sugar Baby Rojas

I watched this today and thought it was a great fight. Fast, clean punches from both fighters. I won't bore you breaking this down round by round because my score was 120-107 for McKinney (Rojas lost an extra point in the 5th for a low blow). Now, one may look at this score or the scores of the judges (119-108, 120-107, 118-109) and say it was one-sided, but nothing is further from the truth. McKinney didn't dominate any rounds until the 11th and 12th. Those first 10 rounds were as close as could be and many of them I felt McKinney just nicked. Rojas made a mess of McKinney's face during the fight and one might be inclined to think McKinney was the loser if they went by facial damage. But again, I had McKinney winning many of these rounds just barely, but because of his jab and pin-point punching. Good fight.

I actually had this as a draw when I scored it a year or two ago in FOTW. Everyone else scored it to Chang though iirc.

I scored on the scoring system of the time, I never do this lol. Now, some or the rounds weren't complete but without a timer, I couldn't be arsed to figure it out, so what you're seeing on the occasional round was scored on what was available. Rounds 11&13 were also MIA.

I have ZERO context of this decision. Was it controversial? Clear? Am I an outlier? Wagwan? If this was the best fight in '67 it must've been a dry ass year. Aside from the odd burst of energy, it was relatively pedestrian.

Edwin Rosario v Jose Luis Ramirez I

Y'know, for whatever reason, I never saw this fight live back in the day and always meant to give it a look see. Here we go.

    Round 1: 10-9 Rosario
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Rosario
    Round 4: 10-9 Ramirez
    Round 5: 10-9 Rosario
    Round 6: 10-9 Rosario
    Round 7: 10-9 Ramirez
    Round 8: 10-9 Ramirez
    Round 9: 10-10 Even
    Round 10: 10-9 Ramirez
    Round 11: 10-9 Rosario
    Round 12: 10-9 Ramirez

    Total: 115-115 Draw

I think Rosario should have been grateful that the WBC just converted their championship contests to 12 rounds at this time. Ramirez was like a machine throughout this contest. He did not have Rosario's incredible one-punch power but he made up for it with a subtle, steady attack to the body - not to mention a rock-jaw - and was still flying in the 12th while the wheels were slowly coming off Rosario's chassis. I could see the fight being stopped if it went into the true championship rounds. But on my card Rosario's bombs did hold Ramirez honest enough where there was a share in points. Excellent fight. BTW, official cards were 115-113 for Rosario on all 3 cards.

Really good, underrated fight. I had Ramirez the narrow winner.

Makes you wonder how highly Ramirez would now be thought of if he'd rightly been given the decision in this and also the Arguello fight. Two wins over a prime Rosario and also Arguello? Wow.

Course he also got shut out by Mancini.....

    Never mind.
